Summary: This WHOLE series ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: For a long time while I was reading this I really didn't think that Black Minx could or would win. But, then again, I kept reading because what kind of story would make the main horse character lose. And I'm most certainly glad that she did show heart in this book, even though she was beat by Eclipse in The Black Stallion's Courage [Am I giving away something I shouldn't?].

Oh, and by the way, it's definitely worth reading.

Summary: More of the same.
Review: Henry buys the firstborn daughter of the Black named Black Minx. She has the fiery temper and his speed of her famous sire but can Henry and Alec get her to run when they want her to run and not when she wants to to win the Kentucky Derby. This is one of the best stories from Walter Farley yet. The first four are great and they just keep on getting better and better.

Summary: Will Black Minx live up to her expectations?
Review: I LUV this book!
Black Minx is bought as one of Henry's first horses. He wants Minx to run in the Derby.....Minx is just like her sire, tempermental and spirited. She doesn't seem to want to run her hardest but when she does she burns up the track! Alec and Henry know she could blow away the Derby field but can they find out how to get her to run?
OK...great book but one question, HOW DOES A PART ARABIAN RUN IN THE DERBY?!?!?!?! It is a simple question!! The Black is pure Arabian from Arabia sooooo how does his daughter run in the Derby? Well, other that that a terrific book! One of my faves.

Summary: the black stallions filly
Review: I read all the books as a kid, now I am collecting all of the books for my own kids to read. This book is one of the best in the series. I feel that Farleys books are best when there is racing involved and the derby at the end of the book is one of the best in the series.

Summary: The Black Stallion's Mistake...
Review: I really enjoyed reading "The Black Stallion's Filly". Of course we all knew right from the get-go that Black Minx would win the Derby; the process was fascinating. This story really centers more on Henry and Black Minx, more than Alec and the Black. Henry's solutions for curing Black Minx of her bad habits and foibles were wonderful.

Oh and BTW, in response to an earlier reviewer's query: in the first chapter of the first book it is plainly stated that the Black is "too big to be pure Arabian". Additionally, in Book #2 (The Black Stallion Returns) Abu Ishak states that Shetan (the Black) is NOT a purebred Arabian. However, even if the Black WAS a purebred Arab, the Jockey Club was still registering Arabians up though 1943 (the first book in the series was published in 1941). One more thing - at least one offspring of the Black already WON the Kentucky Derby - Satan, in the book "The Black Stallion and Satan". Just FYI.

Summary: Best Kentucky Derby Book Written!!
Review: This is a great book!! I love Walter Farley. I have never read a horse racing book that was this good, for reason not just because the horse you wouldn't think would win. The whole time you think Henry will never get Black Minx to the Run for the Roses, but she does. I am also a HUGE fan of the Black Stallion tv series. Best series on tv and it isn't even American. Got to love The Black Stallion!!

Summary: The Black Stallion's Mistake...
Review: To give Henry Dailey credit it was he, not Alec, who bought Black Minx and trained her to race, although Alec did agree to be her exercise rider and jockey. Over 30 books the details become a bit fuzzy, which makes for some minor confusion. Otherwise, the Black Stallion's Filly is a great book. I can't say the same for the series. The author seems content with the pattern of the books, and hasn't stopped using it:

Alec/Henry finds a great horse (usually a son/daughter of the Black) and trains it, then (against all odds) the horse becomes a champion (usually through winning some great race.)

Aside from that, the characters are DULL. Alec plays the careful stable owner, while Henry does all the thinking, talking, and impulsive decisions, which is a drastic change from the first book, The Black Stallion, where Henry is a married man who has sworn off racing "forever." Another thing: Henry has been "old" for a very long time, yet he never gets any older, and never seems to suffer from any of the afflictions that usually come with old age - arthritis, etc.

While The Black Stallion's Filly gets 4 stars, the series gets 2.
