Rating: Summary: All time family favorite! Review: Have I read these books to *MY* son? YOU BET!My two elder sisters, younger brother and I grew up on Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic - the edition that HAD belonged to our uncle! The "ills" the children have are the same the world over. The lessons are clear, and taught gently - Be careful what you wish for, it might come true! Slow down, watch what you're doing. Do not interrupt. There are certain behaviors expected in public. And so on. My mother would "threaten" us during the school year - "Oh dear. I'd better get out Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Tattle Tale Cure." she would say, distressed. Or "Now where did I put that 'Never Want To Go To Schooler's Cure'?" We would laugh, the message clear. My family has turned out just fine, in spite of the "negative message" some claim it contains - we four siblings now are now a doctor, an architect, a softward engineer, and a systems analyst. The uncle from whom we inherited the book has just retired as a surgeon. The book has long disintegrated from being overly loved. I was ecstatic to find it had been re-published! To those who "don't get it", I'm sorry your life is do devoid of a sense of humor. I'd recommend you also avoid such sinister authors as Maurice Sendak, Robert McCloskey, Lewis Carroll....

Rating: Summary: Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic Review: I read this book as a child..and never knew there were more books about Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle until I was quite grown up! This one remains my favorite, however. The pages of my copy are quite worn where I turned the pages ...and read and re-read the stories. Yes, times have changed and much is different today from the 50's but Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's delightful acceptance of children with all their foibles is still an inspiration to all parents --and a reminder to me as a mom to lighten up and laugh with my kids and their antics. Betty MacDonald is very clever in bringing childish faults to light by way of terribly funny situations and even more preposterous cures. I LOVE THIS BOOK! and so do my girls.
Rating: Summary: mrs. piggle-wiggle the irresponsible pharmacist Review: if you want your children to think that the"cure" for any problem, such as daydreaming, lack of energy or hyperactivity comes in a powder or a pill, then "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic" is right up your alley. if you believe in slipping mood-altering substances into your child's body is a good thing, here's your book. if you think children's shortcomings should first be treated with love, avoid this book and the rest of the Piggle-Wiggle books, which treat children like mindless [kids] that parents must trick into good behavior.
Rating: Summary: Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic Review: Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic is about an old widow named Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle who has cures for everything! For example: The Interrupters Cure, The Tattletales Cure, and The Never-Want-to-Go-to-Schooler cure. One time Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle had to use her magic on a boy named Christopher. Christopher had the worst table manners in the world! Christopher's mom called Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle to see if she could help. Rating: Summary: Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic Review: My 6-year-old daughter is as charmed by these stories as I was back in the day--we are working our way happily through the whole series of four. We've all wished for magic potions to fix our problems, but most of these cures rely on Mrs. P.W.'s imagination, humor and common-sense more than just magic (our mutual favorite is the Radish Cure for the girl who won't take a bath). Everyone--parents and kid--ends up happier after Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle steps in. The portrayal of 1950's domestic life is sly and funny but also sympathetic--the jaunty, distracted fathers who leave for the office each morning, the weary mothers obsessed with their children's behavior, housekeeping, and creating elaborate meals. The descriptions of breakfasts alone are enough to make you nostalgic--eggs, porridge, bacon--on a school day!--as is the general picture of pre-TV neighborhood life, treehouses, go-carts, games of kick-the-can and parcheesi. One of those rare books that's equally fun for parents and kids, and the Hilary Knight illustrations are perfection. Let's hope they never make a film version.
