Summary: A unique and fun book
Review: I book this book several months ago for my then seven year old daughter. She is eight now and still loves it. She often takes it to school with her. After all, it is like taking her pet dog to school! Highly recommended.

Summary: Clever, witty, fun
Review: I discovered this book...er, dog, hiding out on a shelf in a used bookstore. I flipped through it and put it back and went back the next day to buy it because I couldn't get it out of my head. It's clever and fun. Has a story line and plot, but short enough to hold my 3 month old's attention all the way through. We've read it twice today already. I like the velvety front and end pages, the pop-up wagging tail and the story that takes the reader through enchanted woods, to a mountain in Germany and back to a youngster's own bedroom if he/she wishes. A new classic!

Summary: a very cute book
Review: I picked up this book a few years ago while I was browsing in at a local bookstore. It's an adorable story, and the illustrations make it all the more complete. If you're looking for a book for a quick smile, I would definately recommend this. Also good for small children, which is probably who it was intended for.

Summary: It's a book you can take for a walk!
Review: It's a book! It's a dog! It's a book you can walk on a leash! It's a dog that will sit on your bookshelf! It's a fun dog book that you and your kids will love!

This clever book, which comes complete with nylon leash, wagging tail, and fuzzy endpapers, insists that it is a dog. He was a normal puppy until he got lost in the enchanted woods. He finds a home with kindly old witch (by witch standards she was nice, anyway), but when he used her best broom as a chew toy, she turns him into a German Shepherd.

That's right. A shepherd. On a mountain top in Germany. You were thinking of the other kind, weren't you? That's part of the fun of this book -- wonderful plays on words.

By the time the puppy finishes his story, he's begging the reader to believe that he is, really and truly, a dog. He may not be like other dogs, "but at least I don't have fleas and I never bite." And he'll never make puddles on your carpet if you let him be a part of your family. If only all dogs were like that!

My kids won't let me trade in our two real dogs for more like this one, but they love spending time with this dog, er, book. My seven year old can read it all by herself, and her almost five year old brother has memorized it so he can "read" it, too.

Summary: Adorable and witty....Almost impossible to put down!
Review: Really a one of a kind, 'come to life book'. The author really outdid himself this time in "Open Me, I'm a Dog". When I opened it for the first time at a book store, I couldn't believe what I read--a dog had somehow been transformed into the book that I held in my hands! Although this was no ordinary dog, he still felt just the same and could do (almost) the same things a normal dog could do (No other dog I know listens to me when I say "Sit...Stay" as much as this one did!). Like all dogs, this dog doesn't like to be alone, so I brought it home with me to show two of the kids that I babysit for. I told them "Guess what...I brought a dog home today". Anxiously, they looked around and the oldest one, who's 7, said "No, where is it?" and I pointed to the bag that held the book. We ended up reading that book over and over and over again, and they treat it like it's almost a real dog! (Or is it?) I highly recommend this book. It's like having a real dog around...only cheaper to care for.

Summary: freakin' hilarious and very creative
Review: This book is truly unique. I agree with one reviewer who cited that there were too many witches, wizards and magic for her taste - however, those that were casting magic were pretty spiteful people. This is not glorifying magic or witchcraft. C.S. Lewis used a witch in his Narnia Chronicles as the embodiment of evil and personification of the Devil - he also used mythologicical creatures like "fauns" in his story, but I have never heard anyone being critical of Lewis's work being "too full of magic."

This is a story that parents will want to read along with their children, and to explain the concepts therein.

The dog is a happy-go-lucky dog until he chases a car (driven by a poodle!) and gets lost in the woods and is taken in by a witch. His teeth itch, so he chews on her favorite broom and the evil witch (who smells like oatmeal) turns him into a German Shepherd (a real shepherd - in Germany). I am telling you, this story is creative and hilarious.

The story is short on length, but long on clever. Akin to a bookmarking ribbon, a cloth leash hangs from the spine of the book (because it's not really a book - it's a dog!) and the inside flaps are velvety so you can pet the book (er - dog).

A great asset for an aspiring illustrator or children's book writer to have on their bookshelf as well - I truly have never seen a book like this before. Extreme "out of the box" thinking went into this delightful book (dog).

Summary: Open me, I'm fun to read
Review: This book passed the hardest test of all. My grandson squealed with delight when he opened his gift and he spent an entire evening, first listening to me read it to him, and then trying to read it to himself. It is books such as this that tempt children into a wonderful, lifetime habit of reading.

Thanks to the talented author!

Summary: I was appalled!
Review: This is a darling little book. I bought it as a birthday gift for my six year old nephew who wants a puppy but can't have one where he lives. He named it Eddie. (The book,.... I mean DOG). It was a big hit with a kid who's usually less than thrilled with the books his Auntie ALWAYS buys him. It's the only book I've ever seen with a leash. I'd like my own copy.

Summary: Portable Canine for All Ages
Review: Undoubtedly it will be adults -- parents, aunts, uncles, friends -- who are drawn to "Open Me, I'm a Dog." Art Spiegelman's name (as the Pulitzer-prize winning creator of MAUS), the highly-conceptual nature of the book and the art itself appeal to an adult's sense of what is "cool" for children. Good-intentioned aunts and uncles will fawn over this book, while parents lacking imagination will believe it isn't really intended for children. And that, unfortunately, is where they'll be wrong. Because "Open Me, I'm a Dog" is an ideal, silly book for a 4- or 5-year-old child. Kids' imaginations are easily fueled at this stage; they just know that inanimate objects have lives of their own; they're sure that there's a side of life that adults just can't understand; they understand that a book should be petted and loved just as often as a lovable canine. So, why couldn't a curse have turned a dog into a book? It can, of course, in this delightfully simple but mischievous romp. A pop-up wagging tale , a hidden bull frog (the size of a bull, no less) and a leash for the book, er, I mean, DOG, complete the package. This small, portable book (there I go again - I meant to say DOG) would make an ideal gift for someone who is 4, 14 or 40.
