Summary: To learn about what can happen in gangs read this book.
Review: "Drive By" By Lynne Ewing I think that this a good book for teenagers who are wondering about gangs or wanting to join one. It is a good book to read. I would encourage all teenagers to read it so they could get a feel for what could happento people when they join gangs. I liked this book because it helped me to understand and gain more knowledge on what can and will happen to kids going in the wrong direction. Even the people that you wouldn't expect to join a gang does and most of the time they will end up getting hurt. If you think that you want to join a gang and become a gang member read this book and then make your decision.

Summary: Simple, Short Children¿s Story About Gangs
Review: "Drive-By", Lynne Ewings's first novel for children, is a brief story about gangs, told in the first-person by 12-year-old Timothy Thomas Cahill, aka Tito. While returning home from a birthday party, Tito and his 5-year-old sister Mina witness their older brother Jimmy getting shot by a passing vehicle driven by a group of local Los Angeles gangbangers. Following his brother's death, Tito and his family are forced to leave their home when the same gangbangers return to vandalize and tag their house. One of Tito's friends insists he should seek revenge for his brother's death and gives Tito a gun. But will Tito use it and give in to peer pressure just like his older brother did--or will he try to rise above the bloodshed and set things straight?

"Drive-By" is a simply-written, short book (only 85 pages) and ideal for young readers (age 10+) who don't like to read very much. Although it's quite sad--despite the somewhat pleasant ending--, there's certainly a lesson to be learned about dealing with gangs and peer pressure. If you liked this book, then you might like "Party Girl" by the same author; it also deals with drive-by shootings and gangs, but it's intended for slightly older readers (12+).

Summary: Drive-By a review by Scott
Review: Has anyone in your family been a victim of a drive-by? In the book Drive-By, by Lynne Ewing, the threesome, which included Kelly, Gus, and Jimmy went on a walk one day. Well, when they're walking something happens. Something that's going to rock their world! Jimmy is walking in the street, which a car pulls up next to Jimmy. He starts talking to the men in the car. Kelly's brother named Gus tells them to get behind the tree. Then Kelly and Gus see flashes and hear loud gunshots like thunder. They thought it was their imagination or something else. They look from behind the tree and see blood fly and Jimmy fall to the ground. The car screeches off.
Kelly hopes she is dreaming. She just witnessed some very sick-minded animals at work. She can only hope that Jimmy was playing a joke and in the car were some of Jimmy's friends. She hopes this was a set-up and a planned joke, but her heart sank and couldn't bear the pain. She couldn't change the truth or take anything back. Maybe, just maybe there's a way for a miracle to happen. Maybe Jimmy was still alive and able to be saved by medical personnel. Ladies and gentlemen, I encourage you to read the book Drive-By and read if miracles can happen with Jimmy's life.

Summary: We used the book for our middle school book club.
Review: Our middle school selected Drive-By for this quarter's student book association. Several teachers used this as a read-aloud with lessons to strengthen listening skills. What was so empowering was the positive response to the theme of survival and to the subtle anti-violence message. The characters were very real and the action was non-stop. But the student response was overwhelming! We celebrated with a potluck dinner for the families, games for the kids, and each child wrote a letter to the author. We had over 100 people show up for this special evening

Summary: Drive By review
Review: This book is about two brothers and a sister walking home from a birthday party and a blue car pulls up to Jimmy (older brother) and shots Jimmy with a gun and kills him. His brother Tito and 5-year-old sister Mina were watching it happen. Jimmy did not tell anyone that he was in a gang, and the people in the blue car were gangbangers. They killed a Jimmy because he taking cash from them. Jimmy wanted his brother, his sister, and his mom a better place to live in. When Tito was walking home from school there was people in his house spay painting the walls and Tito and his sister and mother was forced out of their house. The gangbangers told Tito that they want what Jimmy took from them. Tito at first did not know what they were talking about, till he was in bed that night and remember that Jimmy told him that where was a spot under the house where he would go and put thing that are important to him there. Tito went under the house and saw a box. He opens it and there was money to the top of the box. There was a letter to Tito from his brother saying:
Well littler brother, if you're reading this, I guess you've been to my funeral.
Probably my homies found out I was skimming cash and laid me down, but who knows? I didn't lie when I told you gangsters are either dead or going to be. Banging was fun at first when I was kicking back with my homies. But then it seemed like all we did was go to funerals and cause more. I thought if I could get enough money, I could take you and Mina and Mom someplace safe. Sorry I didn't get you there. But you can get there, Tito. Be strong. Use the money. Make your life sing.

A person I would tell to read this book is a person that likes to read books on gangs. It tells you how a gang member was taking money from them and the gang member find out and they killed him.

"Drive By" was a nice book to read but it was not one of my favorite book because it didn't really have a plot to it. At some parts of the books it was very interesting to read because it was like life was in a gang.
