Summary: Well, what third grader WOULDN'T want to go to the moon?
Review: Actually, the point of "Horrible Harry Goes to Moon" is not so much that Harry makes it to the Moon as it is that he takes pretty much the rest of his class with him (Mary Berg would never be persuaded to follow Harry to the moon, but then she has her own problems concerning being able to jump high in the air and finding an appropriate selling price for Full Moon Cookies). But when Miss Mackle shows up with a purple couch covered with yellow moons for her Third Grade class, the moon suddenly become an intensive object of study for Harry, Song Lee, and the rest of the kids (except for Sidney, who would rather tell jokes).

Suzy Kline's story is apparently based on her 1998-99 third grade class and the "tag sale" telescope that took them on their first trip to the moon. Not surprisingly, "Horrible Harry Goes to the Moon" should inspired other teachers to try a similar approach in their own classrooms (my favorite scene is when Miss Mackle shows up with a suitcase packed full of stuff for a trip to the moon and the kids tell her which things she should not take there and why).

However, young readers wanting to read about what horrible things Harry does in this new adventure will discover he does not do anything particularly horrible at all in this story. In fact, he pretty much does the exact opposite.

Summary: The Moon Sale
Review: Everyone in Room 3B is excited about their assignment to study the moon. So when Harry finds an ad for a used telescope, the class decides to have a bake sale to raise the money to buy it. Once they get the telescope they plan to have a moonwatch and invite all the parents--but no one knows that Harry has a surprise plan of his OWN for the big night.

Summary: Horrible Harry Goes to the Moon!
Review: This is a story of a boy named, Harry. The adventure begins when Harry and his third-grade classmates research moon facts. the children research and compile moon facts in a variety of ways. Harry is very resourceful and gets his information by nonconventional ways. This causes conflict between Harry and a character named, Mary. Mary uses textooks and researches the facts. As the story progresses the story teaches the reader that we can learn by using a multitude of resources. The story continues with the students working together to have a bake sale to raise money for a telescope. The students eventually earn the money for the telescope and Harry is so excited that he makes everyone feel they have traveled to the moon through his imagination.

The story is wonderful and written in the language and voice of a child. The author goes beyond telling a story and teaches social skills to the reader. The author suggests ways of getting along and working out problems that may happen to a child in school. ie. taking turns. The author also does a great job with vocabulary and the chapters are short for young readers. The illustrations help to express the authors thoughts. They bring out the humor of the story.

This book would be great to use in a classroom. It can be used in Science, math, and Language Arts. In Science when covering the phases of the moon, moon facts, NASA, astronauts, and space travel. Language Arts for writing activities, and to compare and contrast characters. In Math to teach money.
