Rating: Summary: The Dark Hills Divide Review: Author patrick Carman has an ability to entice the reader ever more solidly into Alexa's world. I turned the pages with more and more interest as a seemingly simple tale became ever more complex, alive and meaningful. I loved the unexpected revelations in this book. Alexa and the Land of Elyon remain alive in my world even after finishing it.
Rating: Summary: Diamond in the rough Review: I stumbled upon "The Dark Hills Divide" as I sought another book to read aloud to my soon to be eight year old daughter. Somewhat tired of works about young male wizards and frontier American girls I was refreshed by the main character, Alexa. Intelligent, resourceful, self-confident, all characteristics I wish to be role modeled for our daughter. Likewise, she thoroughly enjoyed this story and seemingly could follow the plot line and characters without difficulty. As mentioned by another reviewer I also thought of "The Chronicles of Narnia" as we read about the magical world of Bridewell, talking animal characters and the struggle of good versus evil. Unfortunately we were so eager to read the book in its entirety that little time was left to contemplate the author's true intent. I look forward to re-reading the book this time to my son. This will give "Dad" another shot at understanding the greater tale being told here.
Rating: Summary: Won't be visiting this land again... Review: I was eager to get my hands on this book after all the buzz and hype I'd read and heard about, so a I borrowed it from my younger sister. What a disappointment! Forgettable and boring. The best thing about this book was its cover, and maybe the first chapter. With an underdeveloped and wandering plot, I felt too much was left to chance for this story to be believable and enjoyable. I'm a bit confused about all the fuss: Scholastic buying the rights, teachers, kids, and librarians raving about it, blah blah blah... So much of this book is telling and explaining, and Alexa is an unsatisfying and passive main character. Men and animals tell her what to do, and even in the climax she hardly lives up to the courageous and adventurous girl the author and characters crack her up to be. And there was such an absurd imbalance of characters! Alexa is apparently the ONLY child in existence, not to mention the only FEMALE in existence, given that her mother is on the periphery, only communicating through a letter, and that Renny is dead. Even Odessa, Darius' wife, has no speaking part. Alexa lives in a bizarre community of middle-aged men which is a just plain weird. Where are all the other children? I thought this was a kids book?
Rating: Summary: Samantha- -Again... Review: I wasn't quite sure whether or not my other review would show up and that diappointement me somewhat, so just incase it didn't, I would like to say that this is an amazing book. Full of adventure the whole way through, it will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what's around every twist and turn that Mr. Patrck Carmen has installed in this piece of literature. Definately material made for both children and adults alike.
Rating: Summary: Book 2 Please! Review: Patrick Carman takes you through the fascinating and captivating land of elyon. It is so fun to see the mis-adventure and mischief Alexa gets into as she tries to get outside the walls of her city.Alexa's interaction with the animals will enchant young readers and entertain the old. This book is full of surprises, you feel a warmth as you read it, the same warmth Alexa gets as she snuggles up to read in her favorite chair at the library. If you want to transport your kids into a land as vivid as their imagination then read them The Dark Hills Divide. I can't wait for the second book.

Rating: Summary: Dark Hills Divide Review: The lead character in Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches is 13 year old Adrina, a girl who lives in the walled city of Imtal. The whole meet the characters thing is from Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches too.
Rating: Summary: agh self publishing Review: This is a wonderful book. Even though the main character is a girl, my 12-year-old son really enjoyed it. I also read it, and I thought it was well written and suspenseful. This is a great book for both girls and boys. We are looking forward to book 2. I have also recommended this book to other parents.
