Rating: Summary: A must read! Review: This book takes place in Oregon during the 1850s. 9-year-old Ben was sent home from boarding school with the word that his father had taken ill. He has a 13-year-old brother, Harrison, and a 15-year-old sister. He is now nothing more than a vegetable. Now, not only do they have to harvest the crop without their fathers help, but they must also care for their father too. His father can't talk to him, so it will be a difficult task. Ben finds out from his brother and sister that his father had been hoping to build a barn before Ben came from school. He persuades Harrison and Nettie that they must build it to give Father a reason to live, but that that they have to build it alone, without the help of their neighbors. They manage to stack rocks for the base, and build walls, and a roof. After barn is finally finished, follows a horrible ending.
