Rating: Summary: My Mom Loves It Review: After looking for this book on the internet and used bookstores for the past two years - and finding that the cheapest auctions were selling the original 1950's version off in the $300 range, I can't tell you how happy I was to find this anniversary reprint. I don't know much about it, and I don't know that this review will help anyone, but all I can say is my mom went nuts when I gave it to her. If you have a Baby Boomer in your life that had this book as a kid, they'll love to see it again.
Rating: Summary: Just mean, and lacks a moral Review: Bought book because of rave reviews. Not sure what all the fuss is about. The bear character is just mean with no redeeming qualities. He eventually goes away because he is not successful in his squashing. What's the moral in that story? Meaness sometimes fails to cause the intended damage? The little woodland creatures are just hapless and passive victims of a bully. What's the moral for them? Just keep running until the bully happens to get unlucky, and goes away? My 4-year-old said he did not like the story because the bear is too mean. He agreed we should sell it, and buy another book. I would have given it 1 star, except that the illustrations are nice, in a retro way. If you were introduced to this book title when you bought something else from Purple House Press, consider "Mr. Pine's Purple House" or "Night of the Moonjellies", which are both excellent.
Rating: Summary: My favorite story! Review: My grandma used to read this one to me over and over. I'm now 58 and can't wait to read it to my grandkids. I've been looking for it in flea markets and used book stores and was pleased to find it in print again. It will sure result in a lot of giggles and fun if you read it to your little one.

Rating: Summary: My Heart Danced With Joy ! Review: Of all the books I read to my children so long ago, I never forgot this book. I loved reading it and seeing the fun my children had as I read it. That grouchy old bear is a reminder that even though we may not always feel happy, we can't take it out on others. The story was told in such a gentle way, that, even as we closed the book, we could still smile about Mr. Bear. I was so happy to find that the book had been reprinted. I ordered two copies, and when they arrived in the mail today, I was overjoyed. As I opened the box, I felt as though I was seeing an old friend after many, many years. Thank you Amazon for making it so easy to order, and to receive it in such a short time. This was my first time to buy something on the internet, but now, I have plans to order this book for all my children and their children! Holding this book in my hands, is like holding a cherished memory.

Rating: Summary: Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat Review: There are some childhood memories that you cherish forever. This book is one of them.As young children in Sackets Harbor, New York, my sister and I borrowed this book from the local library almost every week. When we were four and five we moved to Long Island. The librarian said to us -"You girls take this book - you loved it so." and we did love this book. I found a copy through a children's book search and gave it to my sister for her 50th birthday. I could not have given her a better present. This week, she sent me the 50th Anniversary edition, she got from Amazon. It touched my heart and soul more than I could imagine. The illustrations, especially the one with the bear running away are wonderful. Just saying "squash-you-all-flat" would make us giggle. It warms my heart now that I have my own copy again. I think we always were glad the little guys were able to fend off the big bad bear in the end. I hope a new generation can find a special place in their hearts for this story as we did.

Rating: Summary: Ahhh, childhood long ago! Review: This is my husband's favorite book from his childhood. It's such a nice story, and the soft illustrations are so 50's, so PERFECT! Mr. Bear likes to squash everything all flat, so the other forest animals don't want him around. They work together to solve the problem. Kids love the ending.
Rating: Summary: Like having an old friend visit! Review: This story was one of my all-time favorites as a child 45 years ago. I loved seeing the little guys outwit the over-powering Mr. Bear. I have my original copy (though it's dog-earred) but was so happy to be able to buy a new one to share with my grandchildren. Also, a friend and I had been searching antique stores, resale shops, and Goodwill stores for years for a copy for her, since it was a favorite of hers long ago, too. I am so pleased to have a copy to send to her for Christmas now - I wish I could be there to see the look on her face when she opens it!
