Rating: Summary: Nothing surprising happens Review: A Review by Elizabeth The story "Taking Sides", the main characters are Lincoln and his 2 new friends, (James and Monica). This story is about a young boy who moves from an old run down town to a nice town. Lincoln is Mexican, an everyone at his new school are white. Everyone looks at him differently because of that. He his having a hard time getting to know people since he played from one of the schools that the kids there don't like. His new coach is always giving him a hard time. This story I thought was good, but it was a little too short. The could have had a little twist to it to surprise people. In this story a man breaks into Lincolns house (in chapter 5) an trys to taking things, but the man was caught but runs out the door. Right after I read that I put the book down and thought why didn't he go after the man. Why did he just stand there. That part of the book I didn't like. The plot of this story is very simple, nothing surprising really happens. I thought something could have happened with the coach, but nothing interesting happened. The climax of this story never really happens. You get into the book and for get about the climax. An I never once thought about the climax while reading the book. Over all I liked the book, and I think it was good.

Rating: Summary: An Easy Read, an OK Book Review: Taking Sides, by Gary Soto, is the story of a Hispanic 8th grader, Lincoln, who moves from a poor, beaten down part of California to a richer, suburban part of town. He leaves behind his old school, and many of his friends. A star basketball player, he joins the team at his new school. Unfortunately, his coach takes a strong disliking to him, and becomes extremely unfair. The team is scheduled to play against Lincoln's old high school, and he is not sure if he should play his best. Another story that takes place simultaneously is about his girlfriend, Monica. Like him, she is Hispanic, and enjoys playing basketball. His relation with her is anything but steady, but in the end, all is well. I was easily immersed in this easy-to-read, yet uneventful book. Gary Soto's writing style makes this an enjoyable book, but after I read this, I noticed that nothing unpredictable happened. Also, he often brings up a problem, and drops it before it is resolved. Basically, I have two complaints. Firstoff, it is far to predictable. Nothing unexpected happens, and you will find yourself knowing exactly what comes next. Secondly, there is no discernable climax. It ends on the same level that it started. Should you read it? If you have nothing else to read, this is a way to divert yourself. Expect to be amused while reading it, but do not think that this will be one of your favorites.
Rating: Summary: Audio Book Review for Ms. O Review: The story deals with moving, cultural differences and basketball. The main charactar is Lincoln Mendoza or as what his friends say, Linc. He moves from the bario to a white suburb because a burgler took a tv. He used to play basketball for his oldschool(Columbus) and now plays for his new school(Franklin)and they have to play each other. He is becomes stressed out because he is playing against his old school and some of his old friends. As the game nears he gets into an arguement with one of his friends. On the night of the game he plays and loses. He doesn't mind because he made up with his friend that he argued with. I liked this book because the characters speak their native language, Spanish. It kept the feeling of a Hispanic-American community authentic.

Rating: Summary: Taking Sides book review Review: This novel is about this boy named Lincoln who needs to change different schools. The school he has to change is Franklin Jr. High to Columbus Jr. High. The characters are: Lincoln, James, Monica, Mom, Roy, Coach Yesutis, Tony, Mr. Kimball, Mrs. Contras. The setting is: about Lincoln and his mother that are living in a barrio that are kind of junky neighborhood. Then, they move to San Francisco in the suburbs. Then they moved because they got robbed. During one part of the book, Lincoln meets this girl Monica. Lincoln has a crush on her. Monica has told Lincoln that she used to play for the girls' team. I liked it when Monica and Lincoln had a connection, and they played basketball together. It was difficult to understand why Roy liked Lincoln's mom. I didn't enjoy when Lincoln lied to Monica about going to a different church. Monica got mad. I also didn't like when someone broke in his house. I recommend this book to others because you get to learn about Lincoln's life and how hard it is for his family. You can see how it is for his family and how easy it is for us. You probably don't get robbed every day like Lincoln and his mom.
