Rating: Summary: Avoid at all costs! Review: Every night I read to my son, who is now nine. We have discovered many great books together -- classics like "The Gammage Cup" and "The Hobbit", and newer books like "The Marvelous Misadventures of Sebastian" and "Island of the Aunts". We also read simpler but fun books like "Sideways Stories from Wayside School".Out of the 100+ books we've read, McGrowl was definitely our least favorite. You could say it helped us appreciate the good books that much more. The story didn't move at all, the characters weren't involving, and the logic of the book was laughable (I'd find examples but the book has been relegated to the bottom of the "to be junked" pile in the basement -- oh, I remember one: McGrowl can hear a blade of grass move but can't hear the bad guys lurking behind a nearby tree). We probably wouldn't have bought the book were it not for the short bio at the back listing the author's accomplishments in the film world. This book proves that you can be an actor and director and not be able to write a children's book. Who had the audacity to put a number 1 on the jacket of this book, as if it would be the first of many McGrowls? I just learned with dismay that there is indeed a number 2 McGrowl book in the shops. Another annoyance was that a very large font is used to make the book look more substantial than it is. But I suppose in this case short is good. Note from my son: instead of this book I'd love to recommend the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.
Rating: Summary: Mcgrowl has lots of adventures Review: I think this book is a very nice transitional book from simple chapter books into more complex books. My 8-yr old daughter, who is a very good reader, did expand her vocabulary the use of bigger and more complex words. If you love dog stories, you'll like this one too.

Rating: Summary: Mcgrowl has lots of adventures Review: If you like dogs I would recommend the book, McGrowl, Beware of Dog to read. There are two main characters in this book, Violet Schnayerson and Thomas Wiggins. Violet and Thomas find a dog and they take it to the vet for the night. They come back to get the dog in the morning. Thomas, whos father is scared of dogs, takes the dog home to his house. BEWARE of what happens next! If you want to know what happens next read this book.
This book takes place in a small neighborhood during the morning. The two kids don't know what there in for. I love this book because I love dogs and adventures!
Rating: Summary: My son loves McGrowl books Review: This book isn't going to be a classic, but it is fun to read. I have a young son who loves language and we read this book when he was in Kindergarten. Now each time there is another McGrowl book available through a school book fair, he adds it to his collection. We don't have any pets, but he loves the silliness of a bionic dog. The plotlines are ridiculous, but it sparks his imagination and he gets tickled each time we read about Thomas, Violet and McGrowl. If your child likes to think outside the box, he or she will probably enjoy this book and dream up their own adventures about having such a dog.

Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK Review: This rather strange story of a stray transformed into a bio-electric phenomonen seems pitched all over the place, in terms of audience. My 5-year old was very attentive to the story, even remembering some of the heavy-handed foreshadowing. However, the language was very arch, with thesaurus-like word choices, that went right over her head. Presumably, this will help stretch youngster's vocabulary. The story itself is *extremely* contrived, but does take advantage of the great longing many children have for pets. Perhaps the worst thing about the story is the very obvious decision to defuse the dramatic tension at the end, so as to allow for a sequel, which I see has already been written. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that this celebrity author might not have been published if not for his name recognition.
