Rating: Summary: Introduction to a painful topic Review: Addy is the story of a black girl in 1864, as the Civil War was in its ending stages. My second grade niece, an advanced reader, was immediately engrossed in the story. The subject matter may be a bit over her head, though. I suggested she compare Addy's family with her own, asking "Today, no one owns your family, do they?" The reply I got was "Yes, grandma!" Another reviewer says this is a third to 6th grade book--probably third or fourth grade is about right. Although paper, the quality is high, with nice illustrations. Kudos to American Girl for giving us an excellent alternative to Barbie!
Rating: Summary: Meet Addy, An American Girl Review: Meet Addy, by Connie Porter, is about a young girl and her family living as slaves. They must endure the hardships of slavery as they plan their escape. Will Addy and her family be successful in winning their freedom? As an up-and-coming educator, I can't say i'd recommend this book for any area where racial tension might be high. The book does, after all, deal with slavery in the South and the treatment of those slaves. Still, I think it was a good book and see no problem with using it in the curriculum.
Rating: Summary: Jennifer Knight- Senior Block Review: Meet Addy: An American Girl is a truly wonderful book. The time period of the Civil War has always fascinated me, so this book was right for me. It is a story told through the eyes of a young girl. Addy is an African American girl enslaved with her family on a plantation in the south. The story is about an escape from the plantation. In this story you read about families being seperated, fear, and relief. I was hooked from the first sentence, and I can not wait to finish the series on Addy.
Rating: Summary: Addy will capture your heart! Review: Meet Addy: An American Girl is about a young girl named Addy whose family are all slaves. This story is told from Addy's perspective about her family's hardships. This story is interesting and keeps the reader's attention. The author uses language that creates vivid images in the reader's mind. The illustrator also uses small pictures in the margins to give a better idea of what the author is speaking about. This book gives the reader the opportunity to experience what a child living in slavery went through. This book is the first book in a series of books about the life of Addy. There are other books about American girls from different eras in history. After reading this book I would like to finish the series on Addy. I recommend reading this book to find out about Addy especially if you are a child. However, I'm an adult, and I enjoyed it too.
