Rating: Summary: "Sophie Was No Ordinary House Spider....." Review: "Sophie was an artist. She spun webs more wondrous than anyone had ever seen. Her playmates called her incredible. Her mama was proud. Someday, they said, she's going to spin a masterpiece..." So when the time came to leave home and go out into the world, Sophie packed her bags and moved into Beekman's Boardinghouse. She was so excited. This drab, dull house needed all her talents, and Sophie went right to work weaving a web of curtains for the front room, "blending a golden thread of sun into her silk." But it was not to be. No one appreciated Sophie's artistry, or generosity, and as time passed, and Sophie grew very old in spider years, she finds herself up at the very top of the house living in a young woman's knitting basket. This woman is a weaver too. First she knits booties, then a baby sweater. But she doesn't have enough yarn for a baby blanket, and so even though she is very old, and frail and weak, Sophie decides to spin the blanket herself. Maybe this blanket will be her masterpiece..... The dynamic duo of Eileen Spinelli and Jane Dyer have authored a warmhearted and uplifting picture book, with a gentle message of generosity and compassion that won't be lost on young readers. Ms Spinelli's charming and engaging text is magical, and beautifully complemented by Ms Dyer's endearing little spider, and expressive and detailed artwork. Together word and art tell a simple, yet powerful story with great insight, wisdom and humor. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Sophie's Masterpiece is a lovely and affectionate treasure the whole family can read and share together, and a sure classic in the years to come.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful pictures Review: As an elementary school teacher with over 30 years experience, I have found this book and all of Eileen Spinelli's books to be the highest quality literature for children. She writes with unerring clarity, sensitivity to the inner child, humor, compassion and human nobility. Children read her books with deep interest, laughter, care and sheer joy. She is clearly one of their favorite authors! I highly recommend all her books, with a Gold Star for another masterpiece of hers, _Someone Loves You, Mr. Hatch_.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book. Sure to be remembered. Review: I bought this book for my 5 year old, whose name is also Sophie. The book discusses the journey of a spider through the years and her last loving gift before expiring. If your children know about Charlotte's Web, then they understand that spiders do not live forever and that makes the ending a little softer. We loved this book. Buy it you will not be disappointed.

Rating: Summary: Sweet story for children- single mothers will love this Review: Sophie is a sweet, caring, talented spider who weaves wonderful things for herself and the people she cares about. She says good-bye to her mother and strikes out on her own to beautify a boarding house. Her gifts are rejected by the staff there, sometimes even before she has a chance to spin them, but fortunately she discovers a young woman resident, knitting. The spider realises that she is knitting for a baby, but before a blanket can be knitted, she runs out of yarn. Sophie steps in to make the blanket for the baby, and the young woman accepts it with happiness. The illustrations are nice, even if the spider is a little silly with her 8 multi-color socks. The picture of the mother with her baby in a bassinet by her bed is sweet, as the mother sleeps with her hand on her baby. I can only imagine that soon the little one will be snuggled in bed with her mama and they will both be wrapped in the blanket made by the caring spider.

Rating: Summary: Sophie IS a Masterpiece Review: Sophie's Masterpiece is just that. So well crafted by Eileen Spinelli with just the right choice of beautiful words. It is a sheer joy to read this one out loud to First graders up through Middle school.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely perfect! An awsome book. Review: Sophie's Masterpiece: A Spider's Tale , written by Eileen Spinelli and illustrated by Jane Dyer is one of the very best children's book I have ever read. The story concerns a spider named Sophie. Sophie doesn't just spin a web--she weaves extraordinary works of art. Everyone who knows her is in awe of her talents. She strikes off on her own to a drab little boarding house where she takes up residence and weaves her wonderful webs--but none of the people there care for her webs--or for her, for that matter. Except for a boarder who is expecting a child. She welcomes Sophie into her room and as she knits clothes for the baby Sophie, now old and frail, weaves a special baby gift of her own. Warm and touching without being maudlin, Sophie's Masterpiece is a kind and loving story with extraordinary illustrations the dazzle on their own yet blend perfectly with the tale. I have given this book as a gift to many children and am told time after time that it soon ranks as those kids favorite book. Sophie's Masterpiece is a masterpiece, indeed!

Rating: Summary: Quite Possibly My Favorite Children's Book Review: The illustrations in this book are the most beautiful and expressive that I believe I have ever seen. They say "a picture tells a thousand words." One look at the picture of old Sophie creating her final masterpiece brings tears to my eyes. And what a beautiful story and gentle lesson about perserverence and kindness. Both of my daughters adore this book, and my best friend still hates me for buying it for her daughter because she says it makes her cry every time she reads it.
