Rating: Summary: Survivng Hitler Review: I had read this book when I was nineteen years old. I'm turning twenty-one in twelve days, and as I recall back to what I've read, I remember that it made me cry. It was PRETTY obvious, though that her dad died near the ending of the book, and I didn't even PEEK near the end of it (like I usually done to my OTHER books I read by mistake). I say, if you had enjoyed this book as much as I did, you should pick "The diary of Anne Frank". It made me realize a few things, such as; how nasty people can be then - and how they are NOW if you look around to those who tease one another and make fun of people. For those who make fun of or tease people because they are differant then you - I advice you to read this book. It will make you change and think secondly before you tease and make fun of.
Rating: Summary: One Eye Laughing The Other Weeping Review: One Eye Laughing The Other Weeping was an excellent novel. It's about a twelve-year-old Jewish girl named Julie Weiss. Her family and she herself are from Vienna, Austria. Her father was a very wealthy doctor. Her mother was known to be a great beauty, and her brother was known for playing the piano greatly. The family lived a very happy life in the large city of Vienna until World War II broke out there. Hitler invaded Vienna and as you already know, ordered the Jews to be persecuted. Julie's family was beaten by the Nazi's but lived, but did not beat her. Then her brother left Vienna, her mother commited suicide, and Julie and her father were left living in their apartment. Her father told Julie she was to go to New York City to live with her Aunt Clara (who was a famous actress) and Uncle Martin. Julie did not want to leave Vienna. But her father told her that her mother and himself were planning to go to New York City and take Julie and her brother with them. He explained it was not safe in Vienna because of the war. So Julie moved to New York City... I will not tell you more, I will spoil it. But read this book it was excellent!
Rating: Summary: A young girl's thoughts on the Holocaust Review: The book One Eye Laughing, the Other Weeping: The Diary of Julie Weiss by Barry Deneberg was overall a pretty good book. It was about a young Jewish girl named Julie who lived in Vienna, Austria during the Holocaust. She lived with her mother, father, and older brother in a nice apartment. After Hitler took over Austria, Julie's life took a big turn. She escaped the horrors of the Holocaust and concentration camps when her father decided that she was going to go live with her aunt and uncle in New York. She had to cope with the many changes of her new life in America, and had to live without her family, who remained living in Austria. Although Julie missed her family a lot, her aunt and uncle took her in as if she were their own. Julie's Aunt Clara was an actress who performed in many Broadway productions. While helping her aunt practice her lines for the play she was in, Julie was asked by the director to also star in the play Peter Pan as Wendy Darling. Julie took the opportunity and did so well that her and her Aunt Clara were asked to play mother and daughter again in the Broadway production of Our Town. All in all, One Eye Laughing, the Other Weeping: The Diary of Julie Weiss was a very interesting book and easy to follow. It is recommend for those who would like to read about a young girl's thoughts and feelings during the Holocaust.
Rating: Summary: Great Book about the Holocaust Review: The year is 1938. Julie's Weiss's life couldn't be better. Her father is a great doctor and her mother a diva. Her only small worry is Hitler. However things get much worse as the year progresses as Hitler takes over Austria. Her life changes dramaticly as she finds her former friends and confidonts have rejected her family because they are Jews. In Part I of her diary Julie records the voilence and termoil in her much changed Austria. However she is thankful that at least danger has not reached her family until one night the secret Nazi police take all her family away except her. Thankfully they are retured but somehow they are changed people. Because of this one night her brother runs away and her mother commits suicide. The only way out now for Julie and her dad now is to go to America where her aunt and uncle live. However Julie is to make the jouney alone because her father wants to help his patients in Austria. In Part II of Julie's Diary she is in America. Everything seems so changed. However life gets better when she lands a lead role in a play on Broadway with the help of her aunt who is also an actress. Julie couldn't be happier. Her biggest hope is that one day her family will be reunited again. This was a great book about the hardships of a young girls life in the Holocaust but it also shows that things can always change for the better. Barry Deneberg did a great job depicting the Holcaust. Thank you!
Rating: Summary: one eye laughing the other weeping Review: this book is so sad. It is sad when hitler invades austria.the saddest part is when her mom dies. Her brother is a zionist and her uncle and teacher dissapear one day. Her brother moves to palestine. Her dad gives her english lessons and sends her to america with her aunt clara. Her aunt is a actress and soon julie becomes a actress. Her uncle is phoographer and she likes to go with him in the weekend to take pictures in the park. This book is sad and intresting to. I recommend this book to kids 9-12. And also read my secre war the diary of madeline beck.
Rating: Summary: Interesting at first Review: This book was interesting in the beginning, despite the fact the lead character is a total brat. I did not care for Julie at all, she was a complete and total spoiled brat. Like mentioned previously, it was good in the beginning until Julie goes to America, but it becomes a personal family drama, which was quite uninteresting. The beginning and experiences with Hitler in Austria was good enough for me to give it 3 stars.
Rating: Summary: Review For One Eye Laughing, The Other Weeping Review: This is a great, moving novel. The first part of the book, is graphic and bleak, but the second part, when she moves to New York, things get better. I fully suggest this book, aspecially if you are intrested in World War 2. I honestly dont suggest this book for kids under 13 years old. There is quite a lot of bad language, and strong racial words used in this book. Plus it is very graphic. I far as I'm concerned, I would not let my child read about graphic suicide, strong raicial words, and extreme violence, until they are ready. But it is a very good book.
Rating: Summary: Really know Julie Review: This is such a good book! I couldn't put it down. Its about a girl during the holacaust who goes to America to escape Hitler. Warning--only read this book if your ready for a good cry.
Rating: Summary: one eye laughing the other weeping Review: This is the story of Julie Weiss who is in Vienna, Austria when Hitler takes over. When he takes over her mom kills herself, but before she does she gets her daughter and son a way to New York to live with her Anut Clara. Before it is time to leave her brother disapears and she goes alone. When she gets there and finds out her aunt is an actor she gets a part as Wendy in Peter Pan. Soon after that she is offerd a part in a movie, which makes her think about life in Vienna and changes the way she thinks about life. This is a good book. Its a real easy read. I was dissapointed that it did'nt say a lot about World War II.
