Summary: CLASSIC!
Review: I basically grew up on this and "Headless Horseman Rides Tonight". This is something that you can appreciate whether you're a child or an adult, especially if you're like me and you checked it out of the school library religiously. There was a review that said it was "unsuitable for children", ummmm yeah sure. As someone who was reading this book at the age of eight years old I can say that it helped expand my imagination and got me really interested in literature. One day I hope my little nephew will read this book and experience the same joy I did when I was little.

Summary: A most interesting book, truly...
Review: I remember reading this book when I was in elementary school. I was an interesting lad that had a fascination for dreams and nightmares and how they worked, even at such an early age. When I came across this book, I couldn't help but read it. The poems I always enjoyed and could never forget, even at my current age of 31. Imagine my teacher's surprise when it was my turn to bring up a book to be read to the class, and I started spouting these poems. The other kids never looked at me the same again. Recently, I just happened to do a search for it, and here it is at Amazon, along with the other book (that I had no knowledge of..it was always the one book I remember). So after a hasty order, I'll be happy to add these to my collection of things to remember, and close another chapter in my own life and memories.

Summary: Very spooky
Review: I used to check this little book out from my library practically every week back in the early 1980's. As a kid I was always fascinated by horror and monsters, and this book was a natural companion. Very well written and full of beautiful illustrations, I am not surprised that it is still in print. As for the one reviewer who claims that children should not be exposed to this material, I beg to differ. Children are always fascinated by the strange and unusual, especially scary monsters. The verses in this book were very tasteful, not graphic or "disgusting" at all. Besides, even as a kid, I knew that the monsters in this book paled to the human monsters that still lurk in the world today...and who commit their crimes with government and "moral" sanctions.

Summary: Great cadence, great illustrations
Review: The reader who didn't like this book needs to lighten up. Kids love spooky, scary stories. Just ask the Brothers Grimm! This book has wonderful, simple poems with a beautiful rhythm. Perfect for bedtime reading.

The book is not gory at all. Sure it mentions eating children and such, but look at Hansel & Grettle or the Three Bears! Ah well. I highly recommend this book for anyone, child or adult, who enjoys fun, creepy poetry and bleak, haunted illustrations. Wish I'd found this book when I was a kid. I'd have loved it!
