Summary: Great historical fiction
Review: I remember borrowing this book so many times from the school library and even did a book report on it. The struggle to adjust to a completely different lifestyle that Koichi and his family go through are poignantly displayed in the book. Having to go from a feudal warrior culture to California's gold rush era is quite a shock to one's cultural sensibilities. I applaud Yoshiko Uchida and this wonderful book of hers.
