Summary: One of the best horror books I've read....
Review: In the early 90's, Random House took some old comic stories originally published in the 50's and 60's by EC Comics and put them into 5 volumes (single book stories were also later released). The series was Tales from the Crypt, and these books were released when the HBO Tales show was getting to be quite popular. Volume 3 in this series, introduced by the not-so well known Vault Keeper, has to be my favorite, if not the best, in all the volumes. I don't know-this volume seems closer to the television show with it's stories than any of the other volumes-not that they're good too. All the stories contained in this book (and the others) are taken DIRECTLY out of the comics and adapted-none of these stories (save the books that only had one story) were exclusively written for the books. All of the tales are great, and combine horror, suspense, irony, and more, in a terriffic blend. I liked this book so much (and the others) that I made a cardboard cover and binder that contains all 5 volumes so I could emulate the crypt keeper...pretty sad, but you would too if you were a fan of the series, the tv show, or the comic. Get this book, and the others to complete the series.

Summary: This got me hooked
Review: This is what got me hooked on the reprints of the original 1950s comics. I was into the T.V. show, and I spotted this. It said the stories were from old comics, so I looked for reprints and finally found them. Anyway, this should be viewed by Tales from the Crypt fans. It's introduced by the little-known Vault-Keeper, a rival to the Crypt-Keeper in the classic comics. (He is my favorite character.) The stories are:

"Midnight Mess": A sick, disturbingly funny and perversely imaginative story about vampires ("What kind of tomatoe juice IS this?" hahaha, read the story...)

"Voodoo Death": A really creepy story about a walking voodoo doll (remember, the old comics that these stories are adapted from came almost 50 years before "Child's Play")

"The Trophy": It's hard to tell whether this tale of a madman who "hunts" humans is supposed to be a commentary on animal cruelty or just an excuse to be sick, but it's definitely facsinating to read.

"A Sucker for a Spider": SCARY!!! The comic version is even scarier, but this works. The best story in the book by far.

"Mournin' Ambrose": Eerie, gruesome, and bizarre. Although not one of the best, it is still a decent story.

"The Thing from the Grave": Although the Vault-Keeper advertises it as if it were the sickest and scariest story ever told, it is really just a typical back-from-the-dead story (one of the first in the comics). That doesn't mean it isn't any good, but it's nowhere near as innovative and original as the other stories in the book.

If you liked this book, buy the reprints of the infamous 1950s comics (eventually banned by the government) at your local comic store.
