Rating: Summary: Alone and Scared Review: I read this book after having read 12-13 of Poe's most popular short stories. I found the story to be frustrating at times due to Dupin's/Poe's erratic behavior. But if in fact Poe was like that in person, then Avi was just pointing out the effect of alcohol on a brilliant mind. It was interesting to see a writing genius having people problems, and slightly annoying to see him constantly raising Edmund's hopes and then thrashing him verbally as if he was not important at all. The story has a good ending and it made the journey worthwhile. I am homeschooling my sophomore son, and he just finished all of Poe's short stories. This story is next since he will have a little down time before we tackle "Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde".
Rating: Summary: No wonder Avi is the newbery honor author Review: The man who was poe is a fantastic, mysterious, suspenseful, and is a bonechilling story. It has some murder in it but that's what makes it so terrifying, as it should be, because all stories are about or by Edgar A. Poe are meant to not want to be alone or be in the dark. It's just the storie's nature. If you the reader enjoy solving mysteries you should take a look at this book, because at the beggining everything is a mystery including the characters, only until you actually get to know them by reading about their tragic conflicts and who they really are, then you can know who you can really trust. Solving the mystery is only half the fun of reading ''The man who was poe.'' I gave this book five stars and I think you should be able to add more stars because I want to add more! Well... atleast I gave it the max. This book is about Edgar A. Poe and how he helps Edmund find his loved ones. Both characters evolve throughout the story and wind up not seeing each other ever again, Edmund found out that Mr.Poe was only helping him, because he wanted to make a story out of Edmund's worries and problems. But at last Edmund infuriates and dismantles Mr.Poe's story and Mr.Poe just gives up on writting his story. What is also fantastic about this book is that it is also educational, because at the end of all the chapters there is a section on Edgar A. Poe's life and I found it satisfying to know more than I already know. I recommend this book to anyone that can handle a little murder, but even though it gave me goosebumps I loved reading this book and I think it is the best book I have read in a while. I'm just saying that if you want to read a good book for fun, book reports, or any other project I recommend ''The man who was poe'', because I assure you it will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to learn more about the story.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME BOOK Review: The Man Who Was PoeHave you ever read a book by Avi? I just read a book called The Man Who Was Poe by him, and it's awesome! This book takes place in Providence, Rhode Island. The problem is, Edmund, who is also the main character, can't find his Sis, or Aunty Pru! He goes out to look for them and finds a man who says his name is Mr. Dupin. But, it makes you wonder, is his name really Mr. Dupin, or is he disguising himself? Dupin decides to help Edmund find Sis and Aunty Pru. I would recommend this book for people who like mystery (and murder). This book is a bit like the Charlie Bone series without any magic. To find out if Edmund finds who he's looking for, and to see if Dupin is telling the whole truth, read this amazing book, The Man Who Was Poe. by: Rachel Carlson
Rating: Summary: AWESOME BOOK Review: When I read the back of this book, I thought it an interesting premise. The mystery element sounded interesting and I thought that it's purpose might be to get younger readers interested in the works of Edgar Allan Poe, which is a very noble pursuit, considering all the junk kids read nowadays. However, when I look back on the book now, I think it was actually meant to keep kids away from Poe. Why? I don't know. Poe is truly one of the greatest authors of all time. In defense of Avi, I enjoyed his other books. But, he falls short here. Poe is portrayed as crazy and evil. In the end, he is as much a villian as the true criminals. And, I found the sudden switch from dark and gloomy to a sudden happy ending out of place. It held my attention, but left me unsatisfied. My advice: READ SOME REAL POE!
