Rating: Summary: About the "spelling/grammatial errors" Review: At the time of The Book of Mormon's publication (1830) spelling was not standardized. Different books and dictionaries of the era would spell word in a variety of ways that often perplex modern readers. This should be taken into account by earlier reviewers. Because this involves a religous work, perhaps it has some value to comment that the Bible itself has been translated various times and, in English at least, spelling and grammar have been "modernized" in many repectable Bibles. I don't see the difference. Perhaps the reader should look for changes in meaning or gross changes in doctrine from the 1830 Book of Mormon to the present Book of Mormon. I have found none.
Rating: Summary: Insights of President Boyd K. Packer Review: Boyd K. Packer, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( a true prophet of God) said:Changes in organization or procedures are a testimony that revelation is ongoing. While doctrines remain fixed, the methods or procedures do not. For instance, when the editions of the scriptures were published, many corrections were made on the basis of original or printer's manuscripts, some of which had not previously been available. For instance, in Alma chapter 16, verse 5, the word whether had appeared. [Alma 16:5] The original manuscript for that verse does not exist. However, when we found the printer's copy, we saw that the Prophet Joseph Smith had changed the word to whither. Whether means "if"; whither means "where." The next verse verifies whither to be correct. Another example: in Alma chapter 32, verse 30, the words "sprouteth and beginneth to grow" occurred three times. [Alma 32:30] An obvious typesetting error left one of them out. In the 1981 edition, thirty-five words were restored. It now conforms to the original text. There were many such changes. None altered the doctrine. Each change, however small in detail, was carefully and prayerfully considered and approved by the Council of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in a meeting in the temple. All such matters are determined that way. (Boyd K. Packer "Revelation in a Changing World." Nov. 1989 Ensign.)
Rating: Summary: Beware of tortured logic. Review: How much crack do you have to smoke to believe that praying doesn't work, and it should be avoided in search of truth?
How high do you have to be if you are unable to trust yourself, for fear that you are being unwittingly brainwashed!
If this is all that the detractors can come up with, then wow, there's not much to worry about.
But I'm curious how said detractors can vehemently denounce the Book of Mormon for errors, misdoctorines, mistakes, or intended changes--and yet easily believe the Bible to be true, beyond the historical context. Same thing going on everywhere.
The logic of man is pretty compelling, but God is greater. Don't be afaid to go to Him in prayer.
Rating: Summary: Only a brain-washed moron would believe this blather Review: I am not going to bother writing about how fake the book of Mormon and most other religious materials are, but I do need to point out that if people like the reviewer, "Sherry" from Oregon want to try to sound like intelligent people, and convert people for their money-making religious industry, they might want to try getting some education, learn basic spelling, grammar and sentence structure. You sound like an idiot!!

Rating: Summary: I'm amazed at those who will lie to "fight Satan" Review: Liberal propagandists like Michael Moore dishonesty spin the truth to demonize their enemies. Conservative Christians are outraged by this, and rightly so. But what amazes me is that they are willing to turn around and use the same tactics on Mormons. I don't know how many times I've heard the claim that "there have been 3,000 changes to the Mormon's devil book (gasp!)". Rarely do they tell you what those changes are. They, like Michael Moore, supply you with half of the truth, and let your imagination do the rest. It simply wouldn't be as shocking and scandalous if you knew those 3,000 changes were related to spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
In 1830, the English language was not as standardized as it is today. "Smoke" could be spelled three ways depending on the dictionary you used. Much of the spelling and grammar that were considered correct at the time has been updated. Not to mention the mistakes typical of dictating to a scribe and using a crude 19th century printing press.
Now the religious bigots who were willing to spend days counting every mistake in the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon, knew full well what those mistakes were. And they knew what they were doing when they raised a half truth on a banner to rally the uninformed against the "dangerous cult". "Mormons have changed their wicked book"! How awful it must have been for them when a replica of the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon became available, allowing everyone to see the changes for themselves. It is shameful that those who attack the LDS church in the name of God are willing to use lies; the tools of Satan.
Besides the 1830 edition, I also have a copy from the 1970s, the 1980s, and today. From first edition to last, the Book of Mormon is the most profound and inspirational book I have ever read. The attackers, like Everett from WA, who claim it's unchristian, have obviously never opened the cover. Don't be like the followers of Michael Moore "which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel", read the book, and decide for yourself.
Rating: Summary: A brief clarification Review: One of the reviews of the Book of Mormon indicated that people should supposedly reject the Bible in order to support the Book of Mormon. That is not the claim made by the Book of Mormon or by members of the Church of Jesus Christ at all. In fact, one verse in the Book of Mormon declares that the book was specifically written so that we would believe what is in the Bible! It's subtitle, "Another Testament of Jesus Christ," means just that. The Book of Mormon's purpose is to testify of Jesus Christ as our Savior, and it does so with majestic power. It contains, for instance, the witness of over 2000 men, women, and children who saw our resurrected Lord personally, felt the nail wounds in His hands, and heard His voice preaching the everlasting gospel, as well as the testimony of a prophet who saw in a vision His birth to a virgin many years before it occurred, and learned of His important mission on earth to be our Savior. Every 1.7 verses mentions Him, on average, and every teaching in it is in strictest agreement with the teachings of the Bible. I know this book is the word of God, supporting what the Bible teaches and every true Christian believes: that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God and Savior of the world.

Rating: Summary: Go to the source Review: Regardless of your religious views -- if any -- the serious student of religion or mormonism should have a copy of the original. The formatting isn't "bible-like" as in current editions nor are later changes in chapter order and other "corrections/improvements" made. This is just the way it first came out.
If you are interested in Americana or revealed religions, this copy is essential for your library. There are other versions of the original available -- including electronic. But you should have at least one copy of the original without the intended distractions of giving it the "look and feel" of a bible.

Rating: Summary: best book I have ever read Review: The Book of Mormon is scripture,it is another testament of Jesus Christ. It is antiquitity. It was translated by Joseph Smith in a period of less than 90 days. Compare this to the time it took the King James scholars to complete the Bible.Even though the book gives authorship to Joseph Smith, this is not correct. This book is unique in all the world. There is not another like it, I challenge the reader of this review to pick it up and read it. I have a testimony, a personal conviction that it is the Word of God, that it was prepared and saved for us to read, and ponder and pray about. It is full of faith.
