Rating: Summary: An Awesome Encounter Review: A spiritual director, writes Stinissen, has an important role to play in the lives of those he or she directs. He believes that not only does the Church need experienced spiritual guides but, in fact, to some degree each follower of Jesus has a spiritual obligation for the souls of his brothers and sisters. According to the author, we must all help and encourage each other on the spiritual journey at a time when there is a strong desire among many to deepen their spiritual lives. Stinissen provides a detailed list of the qualities needed in a good spiritual director as well as a general discussion of the relationship between a spiritual director and his or her directee, including topics such as discernment and diffuculties in prayer. Regarding the meeting between director and directee, an act of shared worship, Stinissen says that it is not only a preparation to deepen contact with God but "it is in inself a special presence of God".This is definitely the best book that I have read on this subject and would be of particular interest to anyone interested in or involved in spiritual direction or pastoral ministry.
Rating: Summary: Balanced blend of compassion, love, and wisdom Review: Carmelites seldom disappoint when writing of the spiritual life, and of guidance in same, whether from the guide's or listener's perspective. This volume is no exception. Its solid, indeed classic, approach is combined with a modern perspective which maintains integrity while incorporating contemporary insights. There is great respect for the personality, and for loving interaction in direction which is presented as an act of shared worship. Definitely one of the better titles in this area.
Rating: Summary: Very consoling Review: This book provided much comfort after having a bad experience with a SD. It takes a gifted and committed person to provide compassion, comfort and understanding. Anything short of that can cause alot of harm. I highly recommend it for anyone taking on that position.
