Rating: Summary: Not Logical Review: Do we not understand the Truth? Mary is not another Redeemer. We look to Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith. It was Christ who took our sins on the cross and shed His blood for the forgiveness of sins. Not Mary. She was a sinner in need of a Savior. The Scriptures teach that the just shall live by faith, not by some co-mediatrix, called Mary. Highly recommended!!!
Rating: Summary: The Mary of Roman Catholicism: Not the Mary of the Bible Review: If you are a Roman Catholic, you will not like this book. You will be critical of its contents and its author. After all, the Roman Catholic mantra is: We do not worship Mary. She is not Divine. But is this true? Let's look at the parallels that Dr. White presents between Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the Mary of Roman Catholicism: 1) The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus was predestined to be the Redeemer. Roman Catholicism teaches that Mary was predestined to be Redemptrix. 2) The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus was born of a virgin. Roman Catholicism teaches that Mary was immaculately conceived. 3) The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus is the Incarnate Deity, the Son of God, in human flesh. Roman Catholicism teaches that Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. 4) The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus was without sin. Roman Catholicism teaches that Mary was without sin. 5) The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus suffered and died at Calvary. Roman Catholicism teaches that Mary suffered and almost died at Calvary. 6) The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus ascended into heaven. Roman Catholicism teaches that Mary was assumed bodily into heaven. 7) The Lord Jesus is the King of heaven. The Mary of Roman Catholicism is the Queen of heaven. 8) The Lord Jesus is our Source of Grace. The Mary of Roman Catholicism is the Channel of Grace. 9) The Lord Jesus is our Peace with God. The Mary of Roman Catholicism is the Treasurer of our Peace with God. 10) The Lord Jesus is our Redeemer, Mediator, and Advocate. The Mary of Roman Catholicism is Coredemptrix, Mediatrix, and Advocate. Thank you Dr. White for an extraordinary book! Perhaps you could rename the book: The 10 Commandments of Mariology.
Rating: Summary: Some Agreement, Some Disagreement, Often Off Target Review: James R. White, Reformed Protestant Apologist, has written another book in a series of anti-Catholic Church books. The title thesis, Mary Another Redeemer? Assumes White is going to deal head one with this issue and while a backdrop of Marian history is important, White often travels on theological and journalistic shaky ground by setting up red herrings in one place and when convenient, not in another (just to name one problem). For example, in his chapter on the "Mother of God" White sets the stage by going to the controversy that established the name Theotokos. He is write, that one of the reason, if not primary, for the term was to establish and confirm Jesus divinity and humanity. But, he looses credibility when he makes comments in regards to Nestorius, the person who opposed the term, that "he was eventually condemned as a heretic; we have doubt as to whether we have a completely accurate (or fair) view of his beliefs..." (p. 47) Who is we? Most scholars do not really doubt Nestorius' position much like most scholars do not doubt Arius position at the Council of Nicea. White, however, would not make the same charge against the Catholic Church in regards to Arius because, I think, he agrees with the doctrines established. It is a misleading comment.
Further, he speaks of the misuses of the term, but he is wrong on many counts. While there are people who misuse the term, one cannot use the term only to describe Jesus' nature on one hand, but disregard it in the person who the titled is given to on the other (Mary). Most Catholic and Orthodox who use the term never, never think that Mary gave rise to Jesus divinity; but the term is used to call Mary blessed as scripture demands!
While I agree with his main points about the movement in some Catholic circles who are trying to have the Catholic Church official call Mary Co-redeemer, his book, it could be argued, demonstrates that even with this heretical movement, the Roman Church has not made this view, under pressure, a doctrine - because the Roman Church sees that the co-redeemer status is incorrect. The movement is a problem, and Rome should be more aggressive in combating it, but White's book is largely a Reformed position that looks at the conspiracy more than the data. Rome has not adopted the doctrine in 2000 years, and while the movement has its supporters, it probably is not going to adopt this doctrine any time soon.
Rating: Summary: Well Balanced and Written Review: James White has always been an excellent author since I've been reading his work and this book is no exception. Mary delivers the facts and nothing but the facts on the current movement in the Roman Catholic Church to elevate Mary to Co-Redeemer with Christ on a official basis. James White shows the origins of the doctrine, how several past Popes church fathers have condemned the teaching as heretical and gives a proper biblical answer to the issue. White actually goes through the rounds to make sure that believers don't go off half-cocked against their Roman Catholic friends by giving us NINE- that's right- NINE chapters of 'homework' on the issue to make sure we fully understand before approaching the main points of the co-redemtrix movement. In those opening nine chapters (the book is only 12 chapters long), White documents the history and progressive development of Mariology in the Roman Catholic church. Concerned Protestants and those Catholics who are concerned about truth should read this book. You don't have to worry about rhetoric or emotionalism- White stays focused on the subject of the book and cuts all of that out, which is another thing I appreciate about his writing. One thing I also appreciate about Bro. White's book is that a lot of his references are also available over the Internet, so any reader with internet access can also check out the veracity of his statements and quotations. The level of scholarship in the book is second to none. I recommend this book without hesitation to any and all believers concerned about defending and contending for "the faith delivered once for all to the saints" (Jude 3)
Rating: Summary: Aquinas & Chesterton are phat; White's just a crappopotamus Review: This book is not about the average Roman Catholic. It is about the evolution of the Marian dogmas; and this includes the ultra-Marian sect that exists today. James White is hated amongst Roman Catholics because of his extensive Protestant Apologetics ministry. All of his books have been spammed by RC's because they do not like him. The very fact that not all Early Church Fathers held the views of the Marian doctrines proves that it evolved overtime. We must remember that the Early Church Fathers were not laymen. They were spiritual leaders; and in some cases canonized saints(!) Lots of Roman Catholics have disdain for White's opinions; but I truely wonder how many of them can refute him.
Rating: Summary: What I found most amusing... Review: What I found most amusing was the criticism of the non-existent Pope Sixtus VI. As someone demonstrated below, this can't be dismissed as a typographic error. But that's a small Roman tomato compared to White's ridiculous comments about the early Christian views of Mary. White cannot be compared at all favorably to non-Catholic scholars such as Jaroslav Pelikan (Lutheran turned Orthodox) or the late J.N.D. Kelly (Anglican). Better to read: Luigi Gambero's "Mary and the Fathers of the Early Church;" John Henry Newman's "Mary: the Second Eve;" Ignace de la Potterie's "Mary in the Mystery of the Covenant;" or Rene Laurentin's "A Short Treatise on the Virgin Mary."
