Summary: a profound, yet difficult work.
Review: Bhaktisiddhantan Sarasvati Thakura is best known as the spiritual master of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement. However, not many people are aware of his own literary accomplishments. The translations and commentaries on this obscure, though beautiful scripture, display Bhaktisiddhanta's eminent command of the English language, and his spiritual realization. Although much is to be gained from reading this book, be warned that it is not easy reading. The Thakur makes full use of his knowlege of latin in formulating his English equivilants to Sanskrit terms, as well as the commentary of the 14th century Bengali saint, Srila Jiva Gosvami. The first half sets the theological basis for the second half, which are prayers to Krishna, whom the Thakur and his tradition regard as the supreme personality of Godhead. For those interested in the Vaishnava traditions and writings, this is definitely a must read!!
