Summary: Uneven like any anthology
Review: According to editor Penney, the crisis in World Missions is a result of the crisis in the churches of the west. Postmodern thinking and relativism have come into the room of contextualization of the gospel and in doing so, have made the gospel just one more choice in the smorgasbord of philosophies. The individualistic approach to Christianity, which emphasizes the personal above the doctrinal and accomodation above absolute truth has left the church without an authoritative voice in missions. Contributors include veteran missionaries and seminary professors. Penney's own contribution, "The Sufficiency of Scripture as a Foundation for Missions Theology and Practice," is worth the price of the book. The book is an anthology, so I found myself disagreeing with many of the points of some of the authors and some of the points of most of the authors. But on the whole, it is a good investment for the library of any church, pastor, or other individual with an interest in Christian missions into the 21st century.
