Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Top bilingual study bible
Review: For a bilingual study bible, this one can't be beat. The Scofield notes are all there in English and Spanish, and there are both cross references, and a concordance (for the Spanish text only). This bible has a bonded leather softcover, with gilded edges on the pages. This is perfect bible for use in personal bible study at home, or for a Spanish speaker going to an English-speaking bible college.

The bible translations used are excellent, with the King James 1611 in English and the Reina-Valera 1960 in Spanish. These are the most accurate translations you can get in a bilingual bible. A person new to the older style English and Spanish would need only several weeks of regular reading to get accustomed. These translations are also easier to memorize than many of the modern translations and are the ones used by the most serious bible-believing christians.

The Old Scofield notes themselves are a great help in personal study. These notes are far above the notes used in the later New Scofield Reference bible, which were not done by Scofield, but by a committee after Scofield had passed away. There are newer study bibles out there that contain more information like the MacArthur Study Bible, the King James Study Bible, the New Oxford Annotated Bible, and the Dake Study Bible, but many times that information is flawed by bad theology or modernistic ideas. The Old Scofield is still the tops of the field, though.

There are a few flaws in this Bible, however. The typeface for the English differs from the Spanish (they are printed on separate pages, not columns) and need to be matched in the future editions. The bonded leather is a little on the thin side. This is also a very large and heavy bible so you wouldn't want to be taking this bible out of the house too often. More durable hardcover and water-proof vinyl cover versions are also available, however (they are still large bibles).

There is also a New Testiment version (ISBN 1-56694-021-4) in a water-proof vinyl cover that is in a nice compact size, yet with all the New Testiment Scofield notes. I find the NT one useful for street preaching in bilingual areas, where a larger bible would be tiring to carry around, and for studying on the bus when I do not want to carry a larger bible with me.

A bilingual whole bible that would be a good compliment for daily use outside the home or for evangelism in bilingual neighborhoods would be the hardcover bilingual bible ISBN 1-55819-027-9. This one is a little smaller (though still large) than the study bible because it does not have notes, cross-references, or a concordance. I find this one useful because, unlike a New Testiment, you can compare scripture with scripture between the Old and New Testiment when talking with Jews, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses. I also use this one when going to church services because I have a multi-racial/language church. There are also imitation leather and bonded leather versions of this bible.

The Old Scofield notes themselves are a great help in personal study, though I personally do not agree with all of them (or with any other study bible, for that matter). These notes are far above the notes used in the later New Scofield Reference bible (not KJV, despite what it says), the New International Version Scofield, and New American Standard Scofield, which were not done by Scofield, but by a committee after Scofield had passed away. They are highly Catholic-like, married to less accurate translations, and are not recommended.

There are a few flaws in this Bible, though. The typeface for the English differs from the Spanish (they are printed on separate pages, not columns) and need to be matched in the future editions. The gilded edges wear quickly and the bonded leather is a little on the thin side. This is also a very large and heavy bible so you wouldn't want to be taking this bible out of the house too often. More durable hardcover and water-proof vinyl cover versions are also available, however (they are still large bibles).

There is also a hard to find New Testiment version (ISBN 1-56694-021-4) in a water-proof vinyl cover that is in a nice compact size, yet with all the New Testiment notes. I find this one useful for street preaching in bilingual areas, where a larger bible would be tiring to carry around, and for studying on the bus when I do not want to carry a larger bible with me.
