Rating: Summary: The King James Version is the best! Review: BOOK REVIEW:I was a very big fan of the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible and had no plan of ever getting the King James Version (KJV). The KJV was like Shakespeare to me; I had no idea what it was trying to say. I preferred the NIV, because it was something I could understand; it was also the Bible that was used by everyone when I used to go to church. One night, I've read on the internet that the KJV is better than the NIV. The very next day, I bought a KJV Bible. It just might've been my imagination, but when I opened my newly purchased KJV Bible, I found that what I've read on the internet was correct. There are some things that aren't translated very well in the NIV, making the NIV a little bit different from the KJV. From now on, I'll try to stick to the KJV, because I feel its translation comes closest to the words found in the original Hebrew, Greek, and Armaic texts. What I like about this Bible: - Quotes made by Jesus Christ is printed in red, making them stand out against other text, which is printed in black - There's an illustrated dictionary and concordance - There are colored maps. One thing people might not like about this Bible is that the printed words are quite small, which some reviewers here at amazon.com have already pointed out. I didn't mind the small print, but if you prefer a bigger print, I suggest you get the "Large Print" editions. I originally planned to get a "Large Print" edition, but it was expensive and I was strapped for cash. This "Gift and Award Bible" will have to do.
Rating: Summary: Valuable for any student of life... Review: I found some of the reviews below to be quite amusing, but I think that they miss the point. I can only assume that their attempts at humor stem from either disbelief in Christianity or from anger at the way it was transmitted to them. However, I think it is helpful to think of the Bible as a primary document. It has been interpreted in many ways, some of them being very disastrous. But by reading it yourself, you can provide your own interpretation, and exercise your own responsibility for the consequences. The human superstructure of Christianity has a muddled history, no doubt. But so does any human endeavor. Would the reviewers below be willing to cast aside the entirety of science, even though scientific enterprise has maimed countless people (e.g. toxic pharmaceuticals, carcinogenic pollutants, etc.)? Or republican government, even though it elected Richard Nixon and/or Bill Clinton (take your pick)? The Bible provides a perspective on life that is valuable to any person desiring insight and spiritual growth. It contains threads that also run through Buddhism (especially so for the Gospels), Hinduism, Islam, Judaism (obviously), ancient mythology, and even modern archetypal psychology. It is not wise to conform blindly to any single human interpretation of anything. That goes for Christianity, or for Anti-Christianity. That being said, I give this four stars because this Bible provides no historical commentary that would be of great use for those seeking context.
Rating: Summary: The best book ever written Review: I think this is a great book for whatever reason you read it, and that's one reason why it is so great. It has every genre. It's written in the simplest form possible, but there's still plenty of food for thought. It can be repetitious and balanced, but that is part of the style it's written in. It also gives an impartial view of history, a VERY rare thing. All in all, the most highly recommended book.
Rating: Summary: The perfect book! Review: Napoleon knew this, and used the knowledge well. People are much too gulliable. I want to see a day when people stop using religon for any purpose, it has caused too much pain over the thousands of years people have existed. No one will like this reviewthat likes the bible and the petty conformist life style, they must be living............
Rating: Summary: Great deal for the price.. Review: On-screen description says "leather bound", but it's really cheap cardboard. Suitable for a 3rd grader's first Bible, maybe, but not as a gift for an adult. Really cheap in appearance, and the illustrations incorporated are directed at children, not adults. Should be promoted as "Children's Gift & Award Bible".
Rating: Summary: Great Book, Terrible Print Review: There is no dispute that the Bible is THE WORD OF GOD. However, I was sadly disappointed upon receiving multiple copies of this book at the very small print. I cannot pass these books on to adults, my intended recipients, because as people age, they need larger and larger print fonts in order to see what's on the page. I am reluctant to pass them on even to children, because I'm not sure whether the small print will be harmful to their eyes over the long term because they will have to squint. If you want to READ THE BIBLE, then buy one with larger print. Don't buy this specimen.
Rating: Summary: Horrible print size Review: This Bible has such small print, that you finish reading with eye strain. I ended up selling this copy to a used book store and buying a new one (of larger print). The error here is that the publisher made this verison 764 pages long. Why? That makes no sense. Find a Bible that is over 1000 pages long, and you will be guaranteed an easier to read print size. Your best bet is to shop around, try and find out the print size of the Bible you plan on buying.
Rating: Summary: a good second or third Bible, maybe. Review: This makes a good reference Bible if you do not have a NKJV translation, and want to compare passages for further understanding; the price makes it ideal for this purpose, as reading more than one version of a section that is hard to understand can be edifying. My daily reading is with The Amplified Bible (which is the one used by popular author and TV preacher Joyce Meyer), and have been using the KJV for comparison. I bought this as a third translation, but the more I read it, the more I like it, and will probably upgrade this volume to one with larger print in the near future, so I am torn between recommending this as a second or third Bible, or advise buying a better quality NKJV. This is called a "Gift and Award" Bible, but with the print being so small, it would be a mistake to give this to a young person if it is intended as their primary Bible...they will soon tire of it no matter how sharp their vision; though this translation would be ideal for that purpose, a bigger font size is definitely needed. The words of Jesus are in red, and the back of the volume contains a "Read Your Bible Through in a Year" plan, dividing chapters in the New and Old Testaments on a daily basis; also included is a dictionary/concordance which has some line drawing illustrations, and this portion has a nice font size, and there are also two maps inside the back cover. "Leather Bound" means a single layer veneer, with cut edges. In the final analysis, this edition is of a superb translation, but one that can be read only for a few passages at a time because of the print. Psalm 37:4 NKJV: "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart". KJV: "Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart". Amplified: "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart".
