The Jesus Conspiracy: The Turin Shroud and the Truth About Resurrection

Review: Hello, I would like to start off by saying that I'm not a Roman Catholic but an idependant Christian (Non-denominational). A certain freind at a chat room forum recommended this book to me to show that Jesus Christ never died on the cross and that the Roman Catholic Church has lied about the shroud of Turin. As I read through this book and I noticed that there was this big contradiction in it. Keep in mind that the author believes that the shroud is authentic and that it really is the image of Jesus and that he survived the crucifixion! On page 26, the author said that the shroud shows a man that has been stabbed by a spear that went all the way through his body out of his back. And the author admits that this is the case and shows photo's of the shroud to prove it. But near the end of the book (I forget which page) he seems to change his mind and says that Jesus was just "lightly jabbed" by a spear. So, in the beginning of the book, the author admits that the shroud depicts a man that has been speared all the way through his body but then later, at the end of the book, he says that Jesus was just "lightly jabbed" and that the Essenes revived him after the crucifixion (which the shroud shows that the man was pierced right through the body and the author admits this). I don't know about you, but I don't think that a person can survive a spear that has been thrusted all the way through his body and be revived later on with herbs and a wet towel. The author can't seem to make up his mind. Was Jesus stabbed all the way through with a spear (which the shroud shows and the author believes) or was he just "lightly jabbed" as the author later claims? To make matters worse, the author tries to attack the Roman Catholic Church by saying that the RCC is covering up the "truth" (implying that they are lying). The RCC has hired several scientists to study the shroud and the results show that it was from the middle ages. Even scientists who weren't hired or even been told to test it showed that the shroud came from the middle ages. There has been numerous scientists and T.V shows that has proved that the shroud of Turin existed around the middle ages, not during the time of Jesus. In summary, this book is obviously anti-roman catholic and is an attempt to discredit the wonderful truth of the risen Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ!

Summary: A Fantastic Piece of Investigative Journalism
Review: Kersten and Gruber have pieced together the puzzle to get to the same conclusion that was REVEALED to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, the Promised Messiah of our time. His claim was made entirely on divine revelation, and now in front of us we have compelling evidence of its validity from sources with no links to him whatsoever. The revelation being that Jesus is burried in India, and that he survived the Crucifixion. This book along with Kersten's work on Jesus in India provide a compelling and beautiful theory.

The Vatican conspiracy side of things has, to some extent, been disproved, but there are MANY questions that still remain to be answered about the C-14 tests. The comments on the Shroud itself, and also the presentation of the survival of Christ from the cross are amongst the best I have read.

I highly recommend this book. Of course some people are going to reject the information it contains outright, as if they accept it then there faith is destroyed. The objections mentioned in an earlier review about the spear having been put in the side of the "Man of the Shroud" are quite hollow. The spillage of blood shows that the man did have a wound in his side, this in total agreement with the survival theory. The spear did not reach the heart, as some say, that was not its purpose. Trying to discredit the author as not being qualified is the easy way out when the conclusions they draw are so controversial and challenging.

This book has powerful material powerfully presented. Read it!

Summary: A Persuasive Case
Review: The basic idea of this book, written by two European investigators and translated into English, is that the Shroud of Turin is genuine and represents the actual image of Jesus. So why did carbon-dating tests conducted in 1988 show it dates only to the 14th century? The authors spend many pages showing in detail that the test was rigged. The cloth pieces that were analyzed by three labs were not from the shroud, but from a piece of cloth known to date from the 14th century. The authors were obsessive in their pursuit of the facts of the testing and show how the cloth could have been substituted. They interviewed everyone involved, often many times, and sometimes having to pursue people doggedly over time. They obtained photos of the supposed pieces of cloth and had the photos analyzed, and they watched (over and over) the video of the actual cutting of a piece of the shroud. They show how the reported weights of the pieces given to labs does not add up to the weight of the cloth cut from the shroud. Nor does the herringbone weave of the shroud match exactly to the weave pattern of the tested pieces.

So who would want the test to show that the shroud is not the burial cloth of Jesus? The surprising answer is -- the Vatican! The evidence that the rigging was a Vatican job is strong, and the reason also makes sense. The authors say the shroud shows a crucified man WHO IS NOT DEAD. If Jesus was not dead when he was taken down from the cross, then Catholic Church doctrine that makes Jesus' death a "sacrifice" that redeemed mankind from its sins is flawed. The Church cannot back down from any of its teachings, and would protect its existence by relegating the shroud to status of "interesting relic," probably hoping people would just forget about it.

But this is a story that holds endless fascination for the Christian nations of the world. Is the image on the cloth that of Jesus? And how did the image get onto the cloth? The authors tackle that mystery too, postulating that the mixture of aloe and myrrh described in the Bible and possibly used to heal the wounds of an alive Jesus would contribute to creating the image. They experimented with their own mixture and tried smearing it on one of the authors, who was then wrapped with a linen cloth similar to the shroud material. They succeeded in obtaining an image, but it was not of the amazing lifelike quality of the shroud image.

The authors' conclusion -- that Jesus did not die on the cross -- is not unique, since many other researchers and authors have stated the same belief, and many of the attendant theories include the idea that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, had children, and founded a dynasty that still exists. The Jesus Conspiracy just adds more fuel to the fire. This book builds a persuasive and believable case, built around an extensive investigation of the Turin Shroud.

Review: This book requires an open mind.

If Kersten and Gruber are correct (and they make an excellent case), the truth about the Shroud and about Jesus has the potential to destroy modern Christianity, which is why so many Christians find the book heretical and dangerous.

The authors make the case that Jesus survived the crucifixion and spent the remainder of his life in Asia. They back these claims with concise and comprehensive facts gleaned from The Bible and other contemporary sources and texts.

It is a very important book to those readers who are seeking truth, not validation of dogma.

Review: Those who are so quick to dismiss Kersten and Gruber's research are simply *not aware* of the *context* within which their study should be viewed. [Dear reader: Read it!]

First, the ramblings in the Passover Plot come no where near offering the *wealth* of information offered by *ancient documents* regarding the post crucifixion life of Jesus Christ. Kersten's and Gruber's book *must* be read within the context of the fact that one can find,

1. Mention of Jesus amongst the Followers of Jesus in Afghanistan. 2. Mention of Jesus in Rauzat-us-Safa 3. Mention of Jesus in Ikmal-ud-Din 4. Mention of Jesus in the Ninth book of the Hindu Puranas, the Bhavishya Maha Purana 5. Mention of Jesus in the Buddhist book, Book of Balauhar and Budasaf (Yuz Asaf) 6. Mention of Jesus in Tarikh-i-Kashmir 7. Mention of Jesus in the ancient Chinese document, The History of Religion and Doctrines--the Glass Mirror 8. Mention of Jesus on the Takhat Sulaiman (Throne of Solomon) monument in Srinagar

So, with Jesus mentioned in *so many* books of *various* religions [the Bavishya Mahapurana being among the most significant]--books that place Jesus in *in Asia* after the crucifixion--then the next legitimate question is: What was he doing in Asia?

This is where Kersten and Gruber come in. Whether or not one believes the *particular* theory of Vatican intrigue regarding the carbon-dating, the fact remains that Kersten and Gruber have correctly re-revealed what had *already* been understood by Dr. Hirt, Kert Berna, and others: that the markings and stains on the Santa Sindone (Shroud of Turin) show that Christ survived the crucifixion.

Kersten and Gruber present one part of the puzzle, and the ancient documents I mentioned above offer other parts.

Not to mention the fact that St. Iraneous, a most respected father of the Christian church, clearly stated in his work, "Against Heresites", that Jesus Christ was seen *alive* in Asia during the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan.

Well, Trajan ascended the thrown of Rome in 98 A.D.! So do we simply dismiss this statement by St. Iraneous--a powerful early Christian?

Or do we become honest enough to realize that another story exists--one that Kersten and Gruber have meticulously studied and laid out before the reader in a most fascinating work.

If the Vatican *isn't* worried about Kersten & Gruber--they should be!

Summary: This is a self-contradicting work.
Review: To be blunt, it seems as though the author does not understand the nature of the shroud, and so I would be very cautious to follow his advice concerning other theories.

Whether or not the shroud was that of Jesus Christ, the shroud is the most incredible relic that exists today. The shroud has undergone more scientific investigation than any other ancient specimen. The results or science are this:

1)The shroud was not a painting. The fibers lack any saturation of wet medium or directional application of dry medium. This the most irrefutable fact about the shroud.

2)The shroud was not created simply by a crucified person being wrapped in it. Among other reasons, the blood is extremely unique. Although it is of a crucified human male, it was transferred by unknowned means. If a person was bleeding when they lay down on it, there would be smudges, smears, and most likely no distict borders. This is just like when you put a bandage on your cuts. When you take it off, you do not see an exact mirror image of the cut and blood flow on it. You see a smudge of blood. This is not the case on the shoud. The blood appears with distict borders. It is as if it were a photograph of the bloody body, only somehow developed with blood!

3)If it is a hoax, the person responsible, (presumably earlier than around 1250 AD) would have had to be the medical genius of all time. The blood is not only mixed with the proper amount of serum in ALL places, but the veins and arterioles around the crown were distinguished from each other! The medical experts who looked at the shroud commented on this incredible fact. Blood flows in two distictly different ways, depending on where a puncture is made. The creator of the cloth somehow got ALL of them correct. (And there were very many.)

4.) Finally, the most compelling fact about the cloth comes from a look at it through a VP-8 spectrograph (I think that's what it's called). It shows that a THREE DIMENSIONAL IMAGE of the man was encoded in the shroud! There is NO explaination for this that is scientifically accepted.

(There are many many more fascinating facts about the shroud.)

So, whether it was the shroud of Christ or not, it WAS a miracle, however it was created.

Now, to simply refute the claim that the shroud is evidence that Christ lived through the crucifixion: a general medical consensus has been reached that there is both postmortem blood on the shroud as well as blood that was bled while a person was alive. In fact, the blood from the spear wound has been almost unanimously declared postmortem. Thus, if it was Christ's: HE WAS DEAD.

Further, the point that the gentleman made concerning the spear going through the chest is a very good one. If as the shroud demonstrates:

1)Jesus was beaten with a roman flagellum more than 100 times,
2)he recieved MANY relatively deep puncture wounds around his head,
3)his hands and feet were punctured by nails, causing permanent nerve damage to his thumbs,
4) his shoulder was dislocated,
5)and a spear was driven into his side, even if it did not touch his head or lungs or main arteries (highly unlikely):

then his survival would be no less of a miracle than his disapparation would be. (Much less likely that he would travel the world!)

Praise Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior of all! May his humble servants live with the love he taught us!
