Summary: Brilliant
Review: This is a magical work that is at least half the product of McKean's artwork, which is visually stunning, frightening, and unique. From seamless integration of photography and an almost cubist artistic sense, to the flawless lettering (regardless of the opinions of others, I think the lettering is brilliant, easy to read, and adds a lot in its unique styling), this is a work to be savored rather than read.

That alone would make this a must read. But Gaiman's writing is also in top form, capturing nostalgia, horror, and mystery through the eyes of a child in a thrilling manner.

Regardless of what genres one favours within comics, or in general, I think Punch gets at something so visceral and stunning that it only requires a vague memory of your own childhood for it to fascinate.

Try it...I have read and re-read it since purchasing it, and it's certainly a keeper.

Summary: FLAWED BUT FASCINATING
Review: This tale of childhood memories ultimately vanishes into an evanescent swirl of mystery. Those who like hard & fast endings may be put off, though for me the worst feature was trying to decipher McKean's almost incomprehensible handwriting. It's a pity that merely trying to shatter a "comics" convention (in this case, word balloons) should lead to substandard work that obscures good work. Mckean's art I like, but his lettering just defaces it. It also makes Gaiman's prose difficult to read. My advice to Gaiman & McKean: hire a professional letterer, and print the bloody dialogue as a caption if you hate balloons so much!
