Rating: Summary: One of the best technical books I've ever used Review: I must say that this is a great refrence book. It covers everthing you need to know about using the GIMP in a clear, concise manner that anyone can understand with good practical examples. Everytime I can't figure out how to use a tool or achieve the effect I want to, I can find the explantion in this book in no time, read it, and get back to work.
Rating: Summary: Grokking the Gimp Review: I recently downloaded the on-line version of grokking the gimp. In my opinion, the author has done a truly excellent job in explaining a number of crucial conceptual issues relating to the field of digital photoediting. Being a newcomer to this field, I was faced with the problem that while there are numerous books on digital photoediting, all the literature I saw to date is overly focussed on explaining specific techniques and tools with which to manipulate images but, surprisingly, I found virtually no information as to WHY all these techniques and tools function the way they do and produce such interesting results. Carey Bunks highly insightful and beautifully illustrated work Grokking the Gimp has closed my knowledge gap and is an added source of inspiration. Keep up the excellent work Carey!
Rating: Summary: Way Cool Gimp Book Review: I use the Gimp in my work on a day to day basis, and I thought I knew it pretty darn well. But this book has changed the way I work. It does have very good info about colorspaces and color correction, and I picked up a few things I didn't know, but for me the most valuable sections were about making selections. The section in chapter 4 on using the threshold tool to quickly make a selection mask knocked my socks off! I'm using this technique all the time now.
Rating: Summary: Editing natural photographs Review: I've read a number of books about the GIMP, and this one is my favorite. I mostly work with natural photographs, and the big problem is finding the boundaries between the various objects in the photos. I've approached this problem in a somewhat haphazard way ... until now. Grokking the GIMP is the first book I have found which properly explains the relationships between masks, selections, and paths, and how to best use them to work with photos. There are numerous full-color examples showing exactly how to efficiently work with photos, and I've learned about many GIMP features that I never knew existed. This book will make my work with the GIMP much more satisfying.

Rating: Summary: Really Good Book Review: The GIMP can do some absolutely amazing graphics operations. This book does about as good a job as a single book could do on the GIMP, but it does leave some gaps in coverage. But the GIMP is a lot for one book to cover.I had considerable trouble actually operating the GIMP suite. The book gets the concepts across, but falls a bit short on teaching the reader how to make it happen on screen. That is why I am only giving 4 stars. Overall, this is an outstanding book, written by a GIMP expert. I guess it is just not a substitute for time spent on the keyboard. This book plus about a month of experience should equal some awesome graphics.

Rating: Summary: Way-cool for non-artists Review: The GIMP is a wonderful tool, but I have never been able to do very many useful things with it because I lacked sufficient understanding of basic concepts like masks and layers. The great thing about Grokking the GIMP is that the author takes you by the hand and teaches why these things are important and then how to use them in the GIMP. This is much more than simply a GIMP manual! It is a course in basic graphic design.
Rating: Summary: Grokking Away Review: This book is the ultimate hands down best book on The Gimp. Within minutes, you'll be grokking away with the best image editor to ever hit the UNIX world.
Rating: Summary: Very informative and readable. Review: This is one of my two favorite GIMP books, along with Davis' Quickstart Guide. The writing is very good -- much better than one normally sees in a technical book. Note that this is an *advanced* text, not a general introduction and survey of the GIMP. Instead, it is a detailed exposition of techniques for manipulating digitized photographs.
