Rating: Summary: A must for Photoshop users! Review: This is a great book on retouching and restoring photos. It's divided into different parts, each one having tutorials with helpful pictures. The color correction part was helpful for me. I used to use the auto-levels option in Photoshop but now I can adjust the color with much greater control. The other parts of the book are equally well-written and helpful. This book has a lot of tips on how to make your photos and the subjects in them look their best. There are also sections on how to refine skin texture, enhance makeup, and fix dust and scratches in scanned pictures. The accompany website also has many image files that were in the book so you can follow along. This book has really given me a better understanding of Photoshop's many tools.
Rating: Summary: The best Photoshop book around Review: I've used Photoshop for a number of years, but until now have never purchased a Photoshop how-to book. The reason was simple -- most of the Photoshop "Bibles" or "Definitive Guides" you see are filled with, let's be truthful about this, junk. They'll teach you how to create gleaming, 3-D text with marbelized textures and silly gee-whiz visual effects, but barely scratch the surface teaching what Photoshop was invented for -- photo retouching and restoration.I've been manipulating photographs for years in Photoshop, but in just a few pages of Eismann's book I realized there was much more to learn. Eismann's clear tone, direction, and oceans of screenshots showing photos in many stages between "before" and "after," make this book the only Photoshop book really worth owning. The techniques presented inside are smart, timeless, and will help you take your photography to a whole new level. And let's also be clear about who will benefit from this book -- just about anyone who works with images, from professional graphic designers all the way down to digital camera hobbyists. As a matter of fact, she often refers to digital cameras, and provides a plethora of techniques to consider when working with this specialized medium. The book does not come with a CD-ROM, but Eismann does provide a web site where you can download all of the images (in their raw, untouched state) used in the book so you can work alongside it. The book is printed on crisp, bright white paper that holds the detail of the photographs quite well -- an important factor especially for seeing the differences b/w before and after stages, and the sometimes subtle changes made. In closing, I have never seen a more useful book than this. Anyone would benefit tremendously from buying it.
Rating: Summary: Great all-around book for photo editing Review: I ordered this book about six months ago because it looked interesting. I didn't do much with it until recently, when I began to scan, edit, and burn to CD about a thousand family slides dating back to the mid 1960s. Wow, has this book ever been helpful! I knew some clumsy techniques for doing what I needed to do, but with the help of Eismann's book I've greatly increased my proficiency while drastically reducing the amount of time needed to edit my images. The neat, clean, and uncluttered layout of the book makes it easy to read so don't worry about getting lost in a tangle of arcane instructions. I'm using Photoshop 6.0, and while the healing brush in version 7.0 might be helpful with dust and scratches -- I have very little experience with version 7 -- there are many other things that can ruin a photograph. The techniques in this book are easy to learn and quite effective. If you are looking for a book to help you learn Photoshop's photo-editing tools, I highly recommend this one. Even if you are not currently working on a Photoshop project, it is interesting reading in its own right.
Rating: Summary: Very practical and useful Review: If you are into digital photography and like to use Photoshop for image manipulation, this book will give you numerous very precise tips and examples on how to refine your photos, and how to repair or enhance typical problems. It is very much "hands-on"-oriented, and this is also my only criticism of the book - sometimes I would like a little more explanation as to *why* things work as they do... However, I can very much recommend the book. It has already made my digital photo prints look a lot more attractive, and also helped me save several shots which I otherwise thought were ready to enter the "trash can". The book is also good in recommending practical workflows, so you can learn a lot from an experienced user - as Katrin Eismann obviously is. But to gain the most from the book, you should already be at least an intermediate level user of Photoshop (this is also stated in the book). The book has a small "Photoshop Essentials" chapter at the beginning; in my opinion, this chapter is really not worth the effort. If you are truly a novice, it won't help you much - on the other hand, if you are experienced, you don't need it. My overall conclusion: A very good book, with many practical, useful workflows which I use again and again to improve on my collection of digital photography!
Rating: Summary: Photoshop Restoration and Retouching Review: This remarkable book is without question, the best of them all. I have purchased quite a few Photoshop Books and I would not trade this book for the rest combined. Had I known what it contained, I would have gladly paid three times the price. If you primarily work with photos this is the book for you. It is a breeze to understand and practice the tutorials which may be downloaded. In the process of doing so, I also learned how to use PS 6 in ways I had always ignored before because I could not quite understand how to use some of the features. Katrin Eismann is able to teach in a way that is easily understood. She holds nothing back. How to restore, retouch and process photos becomes easy. It provides a solid foundation for the intermediate and advanced user of PS6.
Rating: Summary: Excellent job writing this book. Review: I'm a novice who wanted to restore a whole bunch of all photos from family that my grandmother had in her atic, so I decided to buy Photohop by recomendation of a friend of mind. I have no previous experience in this field, but this book was everything I needed it. The author is so detailed and the practices so well prepare that it took me no time to hands of it, and look like a profesional in front of my entire family and friends. I would recommend this book to anyone, experts or novices like me.
Rating: Summary: A Gift for the Flaw-Plagued Photographer Review: I will admit it. Many of my photos have flaws. Many have not been preserved properly. They represent memories, however, so I am reluctant to toss them in the trash. Katrin Eisman's book equipped me with the skills to restore them to a state to which I can be proud. This book has helped me take my well-intentioned, yet poorly executed photos, correct the color, contrast and tone. Mold, cracks and torn edges mystically disappear. The moments I attempted to preserve were precious to me. The beautiful images that result from her easy to find, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions are a gift.
Rating: Summary: Great book of Photoshop Knowlege Review: I've been thru this book, was not able to put it down. After going throught the tutorials and reading through the chapters I feel very confident that I will be able to really bring poor pictures back to justice. Katrin really knows how to explain the subject along with showing very good examples of work done, this is a must have for anyone wanting to step their feet into photo restoration and retouching, and not just switching a monkey head for a real one. I have actually read through this book twice since I've had it.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: This is a deep, professional treatment of it's topic. I've seen several nice books on retouching, but none that treat restoration with such skill. Eismann doesn't back away from the really treacherous restoration problems and obviously enjoys tackling and renewing a photo that everyone else considers hopeless. She generously offers up information and techniques that I think a lot of other restorers would jealously guard. I was recently put in charge of digitally archiving and restoring my family's pictures. Some photos dating from the 1800's were in terrible condition--my main problem was the images had faded to almost nothing. I bought this book because Eismann specifically addresses this problem and my results were fantastic. My family thinks I'm a photoshop magician (I'm not--I consider myself a solid intermediate user who intends on becoming a photoshop magician....) and I am so proud that I was able to preserve something this important to my family. The other reviews support how terrific this book is but I really wanted to show my appreciation by adding another. With so many expensive photoshop books to wade through, this one rises to the top as essential. PS--I use photoshop 7. Though this book was printed before photoshop 7 was released, it is still completely relevant. People who think the "healing brush" (wonderful as it is) fixes all ills couldn't have very big restoration problems.
Rating: Summary: Do Yourself A Favor And Get It Review: This is a fantastic book for photographers who wish to gain greater facility with Photoshop. It is (appropriately enough for a photography book) written in a pellucid style, and it's fun to use and jam-packed with useful tips and information. The author's website provides an additional ton of up-to-the-minute information and advice. The book will pay for itself many times over in the form of materials you didn't waste and frustration you didn't experience.
