Summary: Clear, straightfoward, excellent examples
Review: I have a large library of AutoCAD 2000 manuals, but this is my most frequently used reference. The concepts are clearly and concisely explained and the "insiders tips" are very helpful. The examples clearly demonstrate the points being illustrated, and step-by-step instructions lead the reader through the examples in an accurate and straightforward manner. Excellent manual for anyone who is teaching themselves AutoCad "by the book"!

Summary: poor reference manual
Review: if someone gave this book five stars, then we must be in a pretty sad state of affairs as far as cad ref manuals go. the index is loaded with entries, but they never seem to point in the right direction. when i do find the correct subtopic i'm looking for, i have to muddle through two paragraphs about why the tool or command exists and how it differs from acad14 before i get to the meat of what it is or how to use it.

i'll admit i never used the tutorials, but who really learns these programs by going through tedious, time-consuming and easily forgotten exercises? i would assume most professionals would rather have a reference guide that gives clear, concise answers to questions as they come up.

Summary: There's a Reason It's the World's Bestselling AutoCAD Book
Review: Inside AutoCAD has been the world's bestselling AutoCAD book--for all users--for well over 10 years for a reason: New Riders and its authors care deeply about the craft of creating great computer books.

Our partnerships with our authors are based on an inherent promise we make to our customers everytime we release a new book: that we're going to do everything we can to give them the tools they need to grow and prosper as quickly as possible in their technology-based profession.

Inside AutoCAD 2000 authors Bill Burchard and Dave Pitzer and the rest of the book's development team took a long look at what they did for the previous version of the book, Inside AutoCAD 14; they listened to what our readers had to tell us about how they use AutoCAD (and how they used Inside AutoCAD 14); and they literally ate, slept, and dreamt AutoCAD 2000 (called AutoCAD X at the time) through its prerelease cycles.

In doing so, they mapped out how to make an already tremendously popular book even better, including coverage that's even easier to find and easier to review with a glance (for those times when you need solutions fast), and coverage that, frankly, other books may have missed or may barely address.

(How many people really need books written on prerelease versions of a product?)

This coverage includes:

--Project collaboration on the Web

--The Express Tools

--AutoCAD 2000's advanced 3D tools and commands

--The AutoCAD Design Center

--The Query features

--Non-programming-based customization

--An exhaustive exploration of 2000's new features and improvements

--And of course, all of the invaluable staples that have made Inside AutoCAD such an historic success: creating, editing, and plotting your drawings; planning and organizing your projects; and generally ramping up as quickly as possible to maximum productivity using this newest release of AutoCAD.

As usual, there's a CD-ROM that includes all of the exercise files used throughout the book, as well as a series of AutoCAD and Autodesk whitepapers, an extremely cool AutoCAD 2000 splash screensaver, and a few demos and other items you might find pretty useful.

We realize that, as a working professional OR as a serious student, your time is valuable. Inside AutoCAD, as big as it is, is still designed to be the #1 go-to resource book available for anyone who needs referential answers, new techniques, or tutorial lessons. You know, the stuff that gets the job done.

A comment we received from CADInfo.net in a review of Inside AutoCAD 14 said it pretty well (and since Inside AutoCAD 2000 is based off of this preceding edition and is written by the same authors, we feel it certainly applies to Inside AutoCAD 2000, too):

"This is the granddaddy of all AutoCAD books and it comprehensively covers all aspects of using AutoCAD in a clear and easy-to-understand way. If you only want one book on AutoCAD, then this is the one to get. This book is brilliant value for the exercises it provides alone... this is the big daddy of AutoCAD books, a comprehensive tome for serious AutoCAD users." -CADInfo.net

New Riders has a proud tradition of AutoCAD publishing, and we're extremely proud of what Bill Burchard and David Pitzer, along with Dave Harrington, Todd Peterson, and Samir Bajaj, have created with Inside AutoCAD 2000. If you're one of the multitudes who've cut their AutoCAD teeth using a New Riders Inside book, you know what we're talking about. If you haven't tried one but need a great book on AutoCAD, see why Inside AutoCAD has sold more copies than any other AutoCAD book in history. Check it out and let us know what you think. Thanks!

Summary: Many Mistakes
Review: This book is full of mistakes. It would be very difficult for someone without CAD experience to complete the exercises because of the mistakes. If you can't complete the exercises, you can't learn the features of AutoCAD 2000. Don't expect an answer if you email them about this, either. I've been waiting 2 weeks so far.
