Summary: You will understand TCP/IP from reading this book!
Review: I am grateful for this book. I like to really understand things and this book makes understanding a reality. It is an exemplary model of technical writing. This is the fourth book I have read on TCP/IP and it should have been the first. Since I am a network engineer with no background in programming some of the illustrations from BSD Unix sailed over my head but there was not enough of this to make me feel that any of my time was wasted. In fact, now I want to get a solid introduction to programming so that I can follow along with the rest of the series this book begins.

Summary: Complex ideas explained in simple terms
Review: I am normally too lazy to write reviews of books that I have read. But this one is different. I truly wants to give credit to the author in whatever way I can. And then I realized I should go to amazon.com and write a review about it if possible. So here I am. If you read same stuff elsewhere (e.g internet articles, other popular books even Stevens ! etc) my experience is they tend to make things a little more complex then they are. Douglas, tells you things that you want to know directly and in simple easy terms.

And he continue to answer all relevent questions that comes to your mind while reading. This way you feel comfortable that yes you have grabbed the crux of the knowledge and feel confident about it.

Summary: Clear explanations from a solid base of knowledge
Review: I hardly consider myself to be an intuitive computer type person but just the same I recognize competence and a willingness to teach when I see it. This style of this book is: thoughtful, competent and sequential introduction of concepts followed by building on the core idea after each concept is established. My only complaints are that I wish there were answers for the questions at the ends of chapters and also (but this is **my** non-computer brain here) I wish it were somehow a hair less dry. In any event I recommend this book as while there is no fluff in here, neither is there any condescending drivel from the "priesthood". Just the competent facts and to the point. Professor Comer ** knows ** his stuff.

Summary: This it the bible
Review: I have been doing Internet protocol engineering for 12 years and I can say that people in the industry consider Comer Vol 1 to be the bible for Internetworking reference. The fourth edition is nearly three times as thick as my copy of the first edition. Douglas Comer keeps this book up to date and useful for modern Internet developers. If you're a student, read this book. I've gone through a lot of books that claim to be the same thing as Comer Vol 1 and have found none that really compare.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: I needed a quick overview of IP technologies and this book is great for that also.

Summary: Great book for networking professionals
Review: I own this book for past 2 months and I often find myself referring to this book to get my Networking concepts clearer.

Summary: This book got me a job...
Review: I recently applied for a Network Engineering position at a large International company. My technical interviewer was looking for specific fundamental knowledge of IP, TCP, Switching Protocols, IP Routing, and Network Design.

The interviewer, a twenty year veteran in the industry, was geniunely impressed with the almost verbatim answers I gave him. This book has enough depth to give you an edge in attaining a contemporary Networking Design or Support position (in addition to having some hands-on experience, of course).

To this day, the principles for my design and support problem solving skills still revolve around this reference. It is a must have for any Networking Professional (novice and advanced alike), especially when you need the irrefutable OSI Layer 2-4 knowledge to "get into" or "out of" most Networking Situations.

Summary: A Fantastic Introduction to TCP/IP
Review: I thought I knew a lot about how TCP/IP worked internally, but after I got this book, I revised my opinion of myself. This is a fantastic book. Clearly written, with excellent diagrams and explanations. I found myself sitting in a comfortable chair, reading this book from cover to cover, strictly because I was learning so much about TCP/IP, and learning it so fast.

I cannot emphasize enough how clear the writing in this book is, and how helpful the diagrams are. If you are a System Administrator or a Network Administrator, this is absolutely required reading. I love this book!

Summary: An essential guide to anyone needing help with TCP/IP
Review: I was daunted by the prospect of reading a book like this one, but was pleasantly suprised. The author takes the reader through the beginnings of networking, protocols and the Internet in plain, simple English.

The TCP/IP protocol is described in wonderful detail and as a reader you can delve as deeply as you want.

I was able to read the book from cover to cover. I keep it handy as a reference (especially when I need help with subnetting). It's not the cheapest book in the world, but it should be the only one you need when it comes to this subject.

Thank you Mr. Comer.

Summary: Teaching TCP/IP: The Best Reference
Review: I've been teaching TCP/IP for some time now with a different book. When I reviewed "Comer's" book, I decided to make it the official text book for the course, and because I found it complete and clear, I proposed the complete set to the students as the best reference they can ever have for TCP/IP. I wish the author or someone can help suggest a method to teach it (the 1st Volume) in 10 x 3hours sessions. Thanks
