Summary: good for beginners but a waste for experienced
Review: this book teaches you the syntax of javascript really well but in terms of actually applying it to web scripting i felt it did a horrible job. if you're looking to learn javascript from scratch then this would be a good book to buy but if you already know javascript and want a book that has more advanced or web related topics then i'd probably take a look at goodman's book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: You've tried the rest.... now try the best.
Review: Excellent tutorial, excellent reference. Written at a level that assumes knowledge of some basic concepts, but manages to get over the new concepts easily with excellent examples time and again. You know it works when you get the 'ah-hah' nearly every reading session. It's the first book I've had since college that's getting dogears!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: No prev. JS exp. required, EXCELLENT REFERANCE SEC.!!!!
Review: This book sends you on the programming direction you want to be in! Don't worry about the length (750 pages). The last half is the reference section. This book tells you everything you need and wanted to know about Javascript plus a few bonuses. Favors Netscape twice as much as IE. Also, didn't i forget, EXCELLENT, EASY, FAST REFERANCING SECTION.

Summary: A Fantastic book for Jscript Programming
Review: This book is great if you are are a beginner looker to become a skilled Jscript programmer or if you are a skilled progammer looker to advance your skills. All in all, worth the money.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: An excellent book, by an excellent author
Review: I just got this book today, and with no prior programming experience, i covered the first 50 pages rather thourughly within 2hrs. The perfect book for beginners and advanced. It also covers both ie4 and ns4, not just the authors preffered browser! An excellent book, an excellent author! A must have for all those who are serious about web programming.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Consider this book a required reference, but take with salt.
Review: This book is by far the most useful javascript (js) reference available; however, in my opinion the book covers plenty of NS-specific issues and does not provide adequate discussion of the same issues in IE (especially security) so don't expect all the answers here. js is quite possibly the most uninventive scripting language available, and since using it can obliterate your web site for most of your user base, the reference section of this book is a must-have when your boss wants js.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This is the only javascript book you need. Period.
Review: This is the best javascript reference book I have ever seen. It is not a book for learning javascript, but good learning resources are abundant. Finding a good reference for the language is much more difficult. Beginning & experienced javascript programmers alike will find this book to be an absolute gem. It is much more comprehensive than any online resource I've found, and it is extremely easy to find what you are looking for.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great Reference for Expert programmers
Review: all serious javaScript programmers need this book. It contains the basics as well as the in-depth coverage of this interpreted language, that is greatly needed.

Summary: Of all my technical books, this one's the best.
Review: I own dozens of books on programming and of them all, Flanagan's JavaScript book is easily my favorite. He is an incredibly good technical author (his Java in a Nutshell books are great too) and this book simply answers every question I ever come across when working with JavaScript. What's more, if my problem is not dealt with directly in the first half of the book, the well-organized reference that the second half of the book is dedicated to always gives me what I need to solve my problems.

I'm waiting for the 4th edition (here my plea David!) so I can learn the new DOM for the 5.0 browsers.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very nicely done
Review: Flanagan did a nice job of writing on a even gradient. All the utilities in the language come with code examples. There are no quantum leaps in this book. If you've read books which claim to teach you a language, for example, in 24 hours, you know what I mean. If you already know C or C++, this book is a very quick read. All in all, this is a great book for people with a programming background.
