Summary: A big book with TONS of good information
Review: I bought this book looking for a deeper source of Windows XP information. While I am already very familiar with most versions of windows, still there were things that I had questions about in windows 2000 and xp.
While this book covered a lot of basic information that I already knew, it was not all to waste. I was able to get in-depth information on home networking, tcp/ip, file sharing & security, user accounts, shortcuts, file management, tricks & ideas for internet explorer, windows media player, outlook, handling hard disks, and so on. This book is a windows encyclopedia filled with good examples and things you can do with windows that you could not know about.
Since windows xp has a lot of windows 2000, it does serve as an instructional manual for both OSes.
I have already taken care of a lot of things that I learned from this book. I was able to set up my home network & manage user accounts in a different way. File sharing & security chapters were also very helpful.

Check this out. If you think you know everything in windows xp, think again.
Like the title of the book says "xp inside out," here you will most of the answers to your questions.
Warning: This book is very broad and has a lot of information. I do not recommend it for a beginner or any casual home user, as you will only get bored with so much information that, if you do not understand windows very well, you may find irrelevant.
I do, however, recommend it to serious users who want to take a deeper look.

Summary: Great book - obviously a lot of hard work went into it!
Review: I discovered this book a while back when it was ordered for a class that I was teaching on Windows XP Professional. This book wasn't appropriate for that class, but I was impressed with all of the information they put in here. I certainly recommend this book for anyone who wants information about using and supporting Windows XP Home or Professional. This is a great book for a technical user or desktop support person. Even a network administrator could find some good stuff in here, but it really does give a whole lot of excellent detail. This is not a fluff book. You never get the impression they are trying to round it out. By the way, I don't know any of these authors. I have been writing for Microsoft Press lately, but I have no financial or social gain from writing this positive review. I just want to praise a fellow author team for working hard and putting out a truly good book. There seems to be so much junk out there, it is nice to see a really good one.

Summary: Applicable, User easy, ect...
Review: I especially like how the book itself helps you, ahuum, use it, the book. Yes. There are nice little pointers and help points that made the difference. It is hightly annotated and directs the reader. The system is much easier with the book, and useful for even the largest of enterprises and then again the family. But like any program this book does let you know about hidden features, and that is the point, there are a great deal of features in XP you wont be able to find without this book. I read Karl Mark Maddox Book SB 1 or God, the first super computer or God, a part which states these same programs are soon to lead to total analog systems, wouldn't that be nice! But dont get me wrong SB 1 or God is fiction,,, I think.

Summary: Helped Me with My Home Network
Review: I have a home network setup where multiple pc's are connected to a router which in turn is hooked up to a cable modem. I always worried about file sharing over tcp/ip as far as security. The book suggested I use the IPX protocol for file sharing instead and showed how to set this up. Clever! It also showed me where Microsoft hid the backup program on the Windows XP CD.

All in all, easy to follow, very helpful, and very informative.

Summary: Useful Reference for Intermediate Users
Review: I have intermediate experience using previous versions of Windows (2000, NT, and 9x). I am beginning to work with XP Professional. I purchased this book because of the volume of information contained within the pages as well as on CDROM. There are several bonus chapters on the CD. I use this book as a reference manual for times in which I cannot figure something out on my own. This text seems to be very accurate. It is highly readable and has useful tips for those who want a cursory overview of a topic, and it has more in depth analysis if you want more detailed discussion on a topic. As far as computer books go, this one has been quite useful.

Review: I have two Inside Out books on my desk this one and Windows Server 2003 Inside Out. I've learned tons from both. If you are looking to leaern all you can about Windows XP, I think Windows XP Inside Out is the book to get. It's not a quick reference or anything but it is very detailed.

I had previous knowledge on computers and I still find it a little difficult to understand some times so I don't know if it will work for a begginer or someone just starting with computers. Your service was excellent!!! book arrived in three days.

Summary: Great Reasource
Review: I use this book 3-4 times a week. It is a good tool in my opinion as it put things in a realworld perspective. If you ever read any of the Microsoft press books you'll know that it is all put in to a plain Vanilla way and most IT business aren;t plain or Vanilla. This book is great to have.

Summary: GREAT BOOK!!!!!
Review: I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get up to speed on windows XP Pro and Home Edtions. The book is lets you know at the beginning of each section what applys and does not apply to Home edtion. I consider myself at or close to the Intermediate level. Did some thinking on whether this book was would be useful, the review here were mixed. I'M SURE GLAD I BOUGHT THIS BOOK!!!!! I just bought and installed Windows XP pro, and this book has given me useful insite, tips, and help on issues that have come up. I would recommend you read the section on installing Windows XP before you install. This book not going to cover everyhting you need to know, but i do not think that was its intention.
