Rating: Summary: In-depth and up-to-date Review: This book offers a thorough description of latest operating systems (Windows 2000 and Unix) and general concepts. At times it may be difficult for non-specialists (I am a biologist), but if you have a good dictionary of computer terms, it's not a problem. Depth and coverage of up-to-date material more than compensate for that.
Rating: Summary: Not an easy read Review: This books is a tough read, Mr. Tanenbaums explanations of concepts is very loopy and confusing at best. I have a fairly strong foundation in Operating Systems but still this book leaves me dazed. In addition to this book I have Operating Systems by Deitel and Stallings and I find that they manage to convey the concepts of OS much more clearly than Mr. Tanenbaum. I would strongly recommend against this book, even keeping it as a reference is a no-go especially considering the cost.

Rating: Summary: One of the best operating systems book Review: This is a great operating system book for in depth knowledge. This along with "Applied Operating System Concepts" by Avi Silberschatz, Peter Galvin & Greg Gagne (1st Edition) would be a very good combination. I think these two book complement each other. But if you are taking beginning "Operating System" class or just curious about "Operating Systems" in general then "Applied Operating System Concepts " should be adequate.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive Text Review: This is a real comprehensive text, although not appropriate for beginners, is the most comfortable book for those who have some background. The exercises do deserve a mention here as they are real brain teasers.

Rating: Summary: A GREAT textbook Review: This textbook was the reccomended text for my operating systems course in college. Since I didn't show up for many of the classes (too much homework, too little time...), I've learned most of the material from this book, and it proved to be more than enough - both for doing the exercises (which were considered to be the hardest ones required for our degree), and for passing the final. I had a VERY easy time understanding the material, and applying it in whatever task I was doing.
