Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: This book emphasizes a careful and methodical approach to authoring HTML. Characteristic of O'Reilly books, its academic style of writing is clear and elegant, evident in the level of comprehension gained at the end of each chapter (it is completely free of stupid analogies that seem to pervade many technical books). The "shorthand, quick-reference definition" boxes are unique and resourceful. In short, this is an outstanding publication.
Rating: Summary: Not recommended for beginners Review: This is a very poor book for beginners. There are hardly any examples. The authors concentrate more on tidbits and useless historical information on each tag. Concrete examples would have been appreciated. This book is more like a novel rather than a guide, leave alone definitive.
Rating: Summary: Very easy to read and very informative Review: This was my first try to learning HTML and all i knew was <html> and <body> when i started. Now i know how to make forms, tables, and many other things. I have like 3 web sites now and I am helping my dad sell tools on the internet. Thanks alot, this book was a great help.
Rating: Summary: Great reference book, one of the best on the market Review: I think this book is extremely well organized and comprehensive. It's easy to use as a reference guide and is very helpful, no matter how much or how little HTML you may already know.
Rating: Summary: Great for people just starting out! Review: This book is an excellent source for just starting out! It cannot be considered a tutorial, but it is an excellent explanatory reference that not only tells you what it does, but how it does it! I reccomend it highly!
Rating: Summary: Not the best book for a Novice HTML Author. Review: I bought this book as a text book for a class on Web Page Design. I found this book to be somewhat confusing, and the examples unclear. The book does contain all of the important HTML Topics: CSS, Forms, Frames, along with the basic HTML codes; and explains them in detail. It is also well organized. But, as a novice, I would have liked to have seen the book cater more towards the inexperienced HTML Author. I think it would have been better to give the reader a more "user friendly" text.
Rating: Summary: Very good book Review: I agree with many of the below comments -- I went from knowing nothing about HTML to being able make very nice pages with nothing more than this book. My only detraction is that it is somewhat weak on concrete examples that the readers can learn from (in comparison to other computer texts).
Rating: Summary: Great overall Review: This book really covers HTML 4.0 in detail!I gave it 4 stars only because the authors keep discouraging the usage of HTML for format tricks and appearance issues. Although content is important, appearance is VERY important if you want to look professional graphially and this sometimes requires "hacks". The authors need to realize that instead of repeatedly saying it's unneeded and to not "waste your time trying to force HTML to do things it was never designed to do. (page 10)" That's just a naive idea and the only thing that I felt was very annoying about the message they were trying to preach.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive, concise, and clear: a good buy. Review: I have searched for the ultimate text on web design, and coding for some time and come to the conclusion that no one book has it all but as far as a good foundation goes, this book is great. Clear explanations without being too wordy or facile, I would recommend this to any one who is starting HTML or wants a solid understanding of what's available. It's scant on pictures and keeps explanatory code to a minimum but there is still a good balance to help lay the foundations for good coding. On a negative note, for tricks and tips, look somewhere else but for the beginner or practiced webbie, this is a gem.
Rating: Summary: The must have reference guide for web authors. Review: I am quite fluent in HTML, but this guide is a must. Some days you can't quite remember a code or tag, or other attribute, and this book is there to save the day. The best HTML book available to both novice and experienced HTML authors alike.
