Rating: Summary: A Fantastic HTML Reference & Tutorial Review: A few years ago, I decided to learn about the organization and construction of Internet WebPages. As with any computer-related topic, there are many, many books available from a variety of authors. I settled upon Elizabeth Castro's "HTML For the World Wide Web, Visual Quickstart Guide, Fourth Edition". I found it to be a very well organized, well-written and easily understood reference that can also be used as a tutorial for learning HTML. In fact, within a few hours of going through the book, I was creating my own WebPages using a variety of tags using Elizabeth Castro's clear explanations which not only describe the correct syntax for all of the HTML tags, but their purposes also. She also explains the contents of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and touches upon the incorporation of JavaScript (with a few simple JavaScript examples) and the insertion of applets. (Note: the writing of applets themselves, as well as the writing of complex JavaScript, is beyond the scope of this book.)One of the best aspects of this book are the distinctions that Elizabeth Castro documents regarding differences in behavior of various HTML tags between the two major Internet browsers: Internet Explorer and Netscape. If you are concerned about the appearance of your WebPages on the two major browsers, it is very important to note these specific tag behavioral differences to ensure that the WebPages will appear correctly on both browsers, or to encourage a user to use one browser or the other for best viewing results. Overall, I rate "HTML For the World Wide Web, Visual Quickstart Guide, Fourth Edition" with 5 out of 5 stars. If you are planning to create your own WebPages, this book is a definite must-have, or you can get Elizabeth Castro's newer release, which includes XHTML.
Rating: Summary: Greatest HTML book ever written Review: This book is totally the bible of HTML books. I use it as a reference guide whenever I need it...there probably hasn't been a page i havent used. The author makes it so easy to understand the often confusing world of HTML with plenty of examples and well written explanations. A must-buy for beginner-intermediate web designers.
Rating: Summary: Highly recommend Review: You get the right amount of material for a great introduction into HMTL. You can read through the book and try out the examples. This is for people who want to understand HTML and actually write HTML code. Well worth the investment.
Rating: Summary: Best of the bunch. Review: When I took over the responsibility for our church website, I knew nothing about HTML or web design. After one on one instrucion from 2 other people who had some experience, and after trying 3 other books on the subject, all to little avail, I came upon Ms. Castro's "HTML For The World Wide Web". In very little time, I began to feel more comfortable working with HTML. It is well written, easy to understand and follow, and not written above the average person's head. Each time I refer to it, I learn more about structuring and changing a web page. It is not only a great teaching tool, but also a great reference. I highly recommend it to beginners and old hands alike!
Rating: Summary: Probably still the best out there, but... Review: ...someone without any experience of HTML or web design might find this successor to Castro's HTML 4 overwhelming. I'm teaching an introduction to web design course & using it as a textbook, but have decided to skip over Chapter 1 because of the barrage of jargon...not a good way to ease students into the subject! Does a complete novice need to know in Chapter 1 the distinctions between inherited CSS styles, selectors, specificity, class, id, etc., when CSS aren't even dealt with until Chapter 8? "HTML 4" was easier to get into & better-paced, I think. However, that said, this is probably the best book available for getting a grip on XHTML & CSS, generally clear and thorough.
Rating: Summary: Very good for the Early Web Designers! Review: I got this book as a gift from my sixth grade teacher and this book is great for making the basic design of a web site. Easy reference guide.
Rating: Summary: Very frustrating Review: I can't believe this book has been getting such great reviews....I am a smart person, but this book is so frustrating to get through! There is so much excess information -- the layout is terrible and the chapters poorly organized. I just want to know the basics about HTML and Ms. Castro doesn't seem to ever get there. In the beginning chapters of the book she refers to concepts we haven't even learned yet. It was terribly frustrating to read and I just simply gave up!
Rating: Summary: The Visual Quickstart is the Way Review: Visual Quickstart guides are the best way to go when you need to learn something quickly and easily. This guide written excellantly by Elizabeth Castro is a great asset to your collection of other books. This book proves its motto. The pictures (on every page except the chapter intros which are very short) are also a great help as you can just copy the code from the picture onto your page if you need to. Without the pictures learning would be so much harder. When I purchased this book I had already read another HTML book that was full of pictures. To get more in depth on this language and to learn a bit about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets. I decided to purchase this book, having purhcased two other Visual Quickstart books published by Peachpit Press (Javascript and Java), because I knew that the Visual Quickstart Guides have always helped me. This book made enhanced my skill of HTML even more. Even without pictures, however, this book would be awesome. Why? Because Elizabeth Castro has described each lesson or chapter to its fullest. Each small detail of HTML is described. This book is one of the best to get whether you are a beginner or an expert in the language of HTML. ---(Last if you are a beginner this book will help you become aquainted with HTML as in the beginning the Introduction gives you a background of HTML...what you can use with it, it's new advancements, and what you can't do, stuffs like that) --- I hope this review was helpful to you!
Rating: Summary: Very intuitive and informative Review: I went through several HTML books to find one that covered all the information and still flowed well. This book was by far the best I've found. It's simple enough for the beginner, but still has useful information for someone who has written HTML before. It's just generally a great guide to have around.
Rating: Summary: Good Price Review: If your going to Fairleigh Dickinson University and taking up Web Essentials you will need this Book the price is Great
