Summary: Recommended as the 1st Java book for beginners
Review: This book give you solid foundation to further exploring Java

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great book for Java beginners
Review: I am new to Java and C++ and I have tried to read a few books on C++ and OOPs concepts, but this book is the best of the lot for beginners. It presents OOPs concepts very well in the beginning and gradually takes you into Java and how Java implements the various OOPs concepts previously discussed. I was also comfortable with the pace of the book.

I will recommend this book to readers who want to gain an initial understanding of Java, C++ or OOPs.

Summary: Best technical writer makes important contribution to Java
Review: I gave this book to someone who had trouble learning from other books. This did the trick! This is Schildt's clear writing style that comes across in all his books (C++, MFC, Windows, etc). Schildt just knows how to present things to people in a way that is understandable. He takes you from simpler to more complex in easy steps. After this book you could step into other things.

Summary: Anyone can learn JAVA
Review: I recently purchased this book and the first thing I was made to realize was that I DID NOT need C++ background to learn JAVA. Whew! That was a relief. The chapters are very detailed and offers excellent information that even a non-programmer like me could easily grasp all the concepts about Java. It covers everything from the basics to the advanced. Was kinda dispappointed that more could have been covered about Java Beans...but overall, this is a good book to start out with.

Summary: Simply the best better than all the rest
Review: Once you start reading this book you will never put down. This book contains Excellent and more clear examples.Author has wonderful ablity of teaching hard concepts in simple words and with simple examples I rate this book as best for java

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: oversimplistic for most parts of java
Review: Though the writing of Mr. Schildt is very clear, the treatments of many of important java features are oversimplistic. For example, when I had a question on using "this" in a constructor to call another constructor, there is no answer in this book;the multithreading part gives only very impractical examples and you still don't know how to write multithreading programs after reading the whole chapter;the introduction of Swing is only a brief mention,to list a few.

I think "Thinking in Java" is a good book, which tells you what is happening behind the scene. However, it is understandable that no book could be titled "complete reference".

Summary: Not Bad....!
Review: A good book which covers mostly 1.1 and very few topics in Java 2. Does not cover important topics such as JDBC. In a nutshell a good for good book for beginner and an average book for experienced person looking for advanced topics.
