Rating: Summary: For beginners Review: this book may be all that is said to be by the other evaluators, however if you consider yourself an experienced oracle user/dba there are better books you can spent your money on.
Rating: Summary: Cannot rate high enough Review: Thomas Kyte is a true expert in his field, with a wide variety of expertise and very strong opinions on technical topics. As a systems architect with my own set of experiences & biases, I found myself alternating between nodding approval, fist-pumping violent agreement, and head-shaking disagreement. His perspective is unique and highly justified, and impossible to ignore. If you're an architect, this book's advice and insight is unparalleled. This book will help you on the path to understanding why Oracle is like no other database. Don't believe the hype, read this book and see the black and white differences that make Oracle different.
Rating: Summary: Every Oracle Person Should own this Review: I have over the years read more than 50 odd books and manuals on Orcale. This book, in my opinion, is the best book along with the Oracle Server Concepts Manual .Nice and easy to understand. I have following Thomas Kyte throuh his postings and articles for more than 6 yrs now - He makes things look so easy. I think all the shops that have Oracle developers and DBAs should buy this book. The only Drawback is that this book does not have a CD - it would be a great help if the book was also available on CD - so that I could print out a chapter and read it while commuting to work and I would not have to carry the thick book all the time. Thanks Tom U R the Best
Rating: Summary: Expert One on One Review: Admittedly most technically books are very dry & boring, but not this one. It's so good that after reading the first few chapters, I thought I was reading some Tom Clancy novels and was totally mesmerized by the insights & tips offered throughout the book. Really, it's that good that I couldn't even put it down, even it was way past mid-night at one point. I took it to work and already some of my colleagues were asking me if they could "borrow" it for a few days. (fat chance, get your own)-I agree with one of the reviewers that this book worths its weigh in gold. As an Oracle DBA/developer, here is my advice to all of you Oracle DBA's/Developers out there: this is THE book. I feel guilty giving it a 5 stars rating because in reality, it's worth 10 stars to me. By the way,if there is a Tom Kyte fan club out there, please count me in.
Rating: Summary: Finally an Oracle book worth the price!!! Review: This book is the only Oracle book that is worth the money. The author's knowledge about Oracle and his willingness to share it are shown on each and every page! It's not a dedicated Oracle DBA book but a real DBA should have it. And really, Larry Ellison should triple his salary:)
Rating: Summary: You will learn from this book Review: Tom Kyte offers up a world of expertise on the many aspects of an Oracle database. The content of the book is drawn from years of real-world scenarios he has encountered. He offers up a problem, then rolls up his sleeves and gets to solving it - the right way! I guarantee that you will find problems of your own, mirrored almost to a tee, in this book. At times he will talk over your head - so make sure that you have a good understanding of SQL, PL/SQL and some other language like C or Java. Otherwise, you will get lost quickly. This book is not for greenhorns. Bottom line here: Tom knows his theory, but unlike so many other authors, he isn't so concerned about discussing theory, as he is concerned about how that theory applies to solving real-world problems. So, he not only understands the toolkit, but how to use the tools wisely. Do yourself and your organization a favor and get this book! Check out asktom.com to get a sense of his straight-forward style.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely love this book! Review: As a 6 year Oracle DBA I couldn't keep myself away from this thick book. I purchased it just 4 days ago, and have already found MANY valuable tips and code that I can apply to improve my work immediately. While reading it late at night for the last few nights, I was wondering about other "goodies" books from the same author Tom Kyte and wanted to get all of them. Buy it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Technical Reference Review: All the oracle professionals should have this book. Tom designed this book from his experience answering 100s and 1000s of questions in the past several years. ...
Rating: Summary: Absolute top notch book Review: Thomas Kyte is the answer to your fervent prayers to the god of Oracle wisdom. Seriously, this is the first Oracle book I ever read that was worth what it cost. It would be worth it at 10 times the price. I've been asking questions at Tom's web site for close to a year now (asktom.oracle.com) and he saved me weeks of coding with a few paragraph answer. Our development team was amazed by having that resource available at Oracle. This book is like having Tom give you a two week lesson on Oracle development best practices. He knows his stuff. Nuff said.
Rating: Summary: it is 5 star of course Review: buy two of the book, one to read, another to keep. you don't need to do that though
