Rating: Summary: Worst book I ever read on normalization Review: I cannot make a judgement for the whole book because I didn't read it from the beginning to the end. However, it gave me extremely bad impression when I was asked read a few pages to help someone to understand the normal forms. I knew the normalization quite well but just need the book to refresh my memory. After spending about one hour reading through relavent chapters, I still have no idea what the first normal form is. I believe the discussion is lengthy, but very inefficient in helping student grasping the central idea. I'm very disappointed and had to turn to some other source for a solution. Be prepared to buy some other books if you are so unlucky that this book is chosen as your textbook.
Rating: Summary: Great for beginners Review: I highly recommend this book for software developers who are new to databases. It covers a wide range of database topics and provides lots of examples
Rating: Summary: Best book on database design Review: If you are taking a college level course in the fundamentals of database design and you are having a hard time understanding what your professor is talking about, then this textbook is a must. Your professor might cover the topics in a difference sequence, but you could very easily find your way around in this textbook. It covers all the basics of relational design (which is the topic most colleges teach) in an excellent manner. It is full of textual examples coupled with graphical representations. No need to get the latest edition. Even an older one would do. Have fun with databases.

Rating: Summary: Probably the best book you can buy on databse design Review: The biggest problem with finding books on designing databases is that there are so few around for a topic that is so important. All the other books I have seen to date have explanations that are either unrealistically convoluted or to simplistic to have any real world use. This book is an exception by presenting data modelling in a practical and logical manner. The only negative side is that the text in the latest edition is very small but for the only decent book on data modelling that's out there its worth getting out the glasses. I would have given this book 4 stars for its overall value but felt that some of the single stars were unfair.
Rating: Summary: Excellent contents, however, too much strain on the eyes. Review: The book covers all relevant topics in the database processing and management area. It is a good read if you know the subject area well. I found it too stressful for the eyes as the writing is so small.
Rating: Summary: Not a good book! Review: The book is extremely boring. I am using it in a class, so there is no choice of textbook. The book has a number of typos/errors and is often hard to follow. Look for a better one because this text is very far from the best. Pages don't have chapter number written on them, which is just another inconvenience.
Rating: Summary: It was an OK text book Review: The solution manual to the book needs to have chapter numbers identified on each page. If you have to look something up you have to find the first page of the solution chapter to know what chapter the problems you are looking at are in.
Rating: Summary: Best DB Design and DB Theory book on the market!!!! Review: This book is top notch...I've read many DB design books, but this one took the cake..When I took my database design class at my university, the professor was great, but the book was even BETTER!!!! I never knew about "normalizing data" until I saw this book and took the class!!! The theory, concepts, examples, and illustrations are 5-star quality!! I still use this book today, and its more than a year passed now, when I need to look up or refresh myself on a concept...Excellent learning tool, as well as a great reference for DB design....Only one problem, the book is "big" in size!!! Get it IF you can!!!
