Rating: Summary: A waste of time and money Review: I think it is a waste of time and money getting this book, it helped me in no way. Everything is superficial and you can be sure that you are not going to program anything with it.
Rating: Summary: Superb Book for VBA Review: This is a wonderful book which can be used to learn VBA, as well as a reference for later use. This book distinguishes itself from others in these respects: (1) As a C and Fortran programmer, I like a bottom-up, structured programming approach; rules about the language, semantics, and other useful issues. This book layes it out in 4 solid chapters. Then, it goes on to describe Userforms and Controls, more advanced VB concepts. This is great for somebody with a Science/Engineering/Finance bent.(2) All other VB books I have read take a muddled approach wherby they depict fragmented examples, usually about how to record a macro and see the ensuing code (as opposed to writing code from scratch) and after a few pages you realize the utter INCOHERENCE. This book highlights the structured programming approach: few basic rules and principles, build on from there. A solid book, along with a useful CD. Additionally, a clear and conversational style of writing makes this a really goob book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book! Review: I bought this book after looking at several others. I read 150 pages in the first day alone. Excellent resource! I've been using excel for three years now and finally decided to take my knowledge regarding excel to the next level. I chose the correct book to help me do so. Walkenbach is called "Mr. Spreadsheet" for a reason. He knows what he is talking about. There is no fluff or filler in this book. Every page is packed with valuable information. I recomend this book over other Excel VBA books I have looked at. Very well done. The CD is also a great resource.
Rating: Summary: superb Review: I had absolutely no knowledge of the Excel object model but was an intermediate-level Excel user before getting Mr. Walkenbach's book. I read the first 300 pages of the book in a week; his presentation is transparent and crafted in a way that makes the material difficult to forget. Within a week I had written a non-trivial application. I have since read his first 2 chapters on UserForms and started using them in applications. Again, excellent presentation and great results. I don't know if this book was intended for beginners, but it surely worked for me.
Rating: Summary: For Excel power users and VBA novices Review: This book is not only for the users of Excel but also for those guys who want to learn Macro/VBA in Excel environment. After reading the book, I am confidence in building professional-looking forms and developing custom systems with VBA. If you want to become a powerful user in Excel or you want to learn the usage of Macro/VBA, this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: Essential Resource for Spreadsheet Developers Review: Irreplaceable resource for spreadsheet developers. No wasted space or filler material. In fact it could easily have doubled in size.
Rating: Summary: It is a good reference to Excel 2000 VBA Review: I was a little underwelmed by the content of this book after having read all of the other reviews posted. With MS now incorporating OLAP into Excel 2000 I had really hoped to find "anything" in this book that would have offered some extra knowledge on the subject. But no, nothing was there. So if you are looking for a general reference to the Excel OM and some VBA procedures, then this is the book for you. However if you are looking for a real book that dives into Excel in all of it's glory then I would recomend Que's book on Excel 2000. Although there is only limited programming information in it, the book does truly highlight the new advantages of Excel 2K.
Rating: Summary: The ONLY book you need on Excel programming Review: I have been waiting for a revised edition to the previous book which involved power programming with Excel 95 (Excel 97 was skipped). My knowledge of Excel increased exponentially with this book, both in programming skills and overall Excel functionality. The examples on the CD ROM provide a way to learn with concrete examples. These sample code modules can be modified and there are so many worthwhile code snippets that the price of the book is well worth it on code samples alone. The new book for Excel 2000 takes advantage of the new VBA in Excel 97 and 2000 and it follows with the same easy to use format and explanation of concepts as the previous one. Because of this book, I have been able to work as a consultant and instructor in Excel programming - it is that well written. If you want to learn more about making Excel 97/2000 work the way you work, then you MUST get this book !
Rating: Summary: One of the best books around for power users and programming Review: A thoroughly comprehensive coverage of the power of VBA using Excel as the base. The code samples are excellent and give wide coverage of nearly all aspects. The companion CD is invaluable. A MUST have book
Rating: Summary: A good collection of hard-to-find utility & coding tips Review: This is not a easy book to read for me - but I found the time I spent on it quite rewarding. The best part of the book is surely the accompanied coding modules in the CD rom. Unfortunately, I cannot find a complete, integrated application example in the book to sustain the various guidelines on power packaging. Also lacking is the component of Web connectivity - a bit disappointing as the vaious new web-tools available in Excel2000 were not discussed at all.
