Summary: Decent overview, but no depth
Review: This is a decent overview of the topics covered, but goes into very little depth. Not enough depth to seriously develop using any of the topics. I use this as an occasional reference book, but don't rely on it as a guide. I also found the explanations and organization inferior. Many of the same topics are covered in about the same detail, but in a much better organized manner by Bruce Eckel's Thinking in Java.

Summary: book that will help you and make you better
Review: we're using this book in my Java class, all I have to say isthat I would be lost without it. Careful though, it's not all ingreat detail since the book goes over so many advanced topics, but If you've read the first book, this one will be a lot easier to read and understand and will help you become a better Java programmer.

cheers, onepaul END

Summary: Don't bother with this book
Review: When perusing the table of contents, I thought to myself that this book could be really helpful. So I bought it. What a waste.

This book is a heaping pile of wasted recycled paper. Most of the chapters don't go into any detail, and the code doesn't have any documentation at all. Advanced Swing? Get Graphic Java 2. JDBC? Read the JDBC tutorial at java.sun.com. Printing? Don't even bother.

I got this book because I am confused on printing in Java. The chapter explains what printing is, gives a couple of code samples, and then goes on to the next section.

All in all, this book is pointless. Don't waste your money on this one, cuz you will only end up with a $30.00 paper weight.

Summary: Please think before you buy it!
Review: With books available in the market for each topic covered in this title (unlike the java 1.1 days), this book is useful for beginners who want to understand what are the advanced concepts available in java.

Summary: These guys simply know what time it is.
Review: You can go ahead and read all other java books, but until you read this one and the first volume, you are simply missing out.

Content is excellent, you can read it straight up or use it as a reference. I do both. These guys are so experienced that you'll find yourself often just reading to see what these guys have to say about a particular approach (to solving a problem) and what other routes you may take.

The writting is so superb that I think if Cornell wrote a book on Butterfly Reproduction I would seriously consider reading it.

The downside is that you really need to buy both volumes, and then the Graphic Java to have complete coverage.

But if you think about it, there is so much material to cover you really need 2 volumes. I am sure other books try to cover everything then they spread themselves thin....
