Summary: Great book for learning C#!
Review: Inside C# was a pleasure to read, and I hope we'll see more books like this from the author. If you're looking for a book to learn C#, look no further. This book is focused strictly on C# and only delves into the base class libraries where it is necessary to support certain advanced functionality (such as multithreading and reflection). This narrow focus allows you to concentrate on what you're trying to accomplish (ie. learn C# syntax) instead of having to deal with the vast amount of available base classes at the same time. Kudos to the author for being so responsive to questions, errata, etc., as well!

Summary: An exceptional book
Review: Being an experienced C/C++ professional programmer this book really hit the spot. I am very impressed with Tom's style, and it constantly referred back to the differences between C# and C++ which was exactly what I wanted.

Clear, consise and very well written ...

Summary: Well done - Best of breed
Review: For the first time in a long time I sat down and actually enjoyed learning from a technical book! How many times have we purchased a book only to be driven to bed by some wannabe's author's feeble attempts at humor and wit? However, a book written by someone that has a good writing style wouldn't do me much good (or you for that matter if you're looking at this book) if it didn't also "cut the mustard" on the technical side. Believe me, I've read every single C# book on the market and this is BY FAR the best of the lot.

PROS: Great introduction to the type system, classes, operators and operator overloading. Also, major kudos for including several .net chapters on multithreading, reflection and com interoperability.

CONS: Would like to have seen a better opening chapter on oop. Would also like to see more .net stuff - especially winforms. However, since the book's focus is C#, I really couldn't take off for that omission.

Anyway, in final, a really well done book and one that I will keep handy for a good while to come.

Summary: Great introduction to C# !!!
Review: I enjoyed this book and the writing style of the author. This book was my first exposure to C# and made me confortable enough in deciding to proceed with a plan to base a major development project around this language and other aspects of Microsoft.net over the next year.

There are plenty of great examples to test and try. Much of the material is discussed in detail.

I hope the author has a chance to update this book once the Visual C# moves from beta to a shipping product. And hopefully a few chapters (or entire section) might possibly be devoted to using Visual C# with WinForms.

Thanks! ---> Kelsey McClanahan

Summary: Absolutely what I needed! Thanks!
Review: Extremely well organized and well thought-out, this book was exactly what the doctor ordered to get me up and running with beta2! While other reviewers have talked about the .net stuff, I really liked the C# specific chapters on arrays, attributes and operators. I also learned a great deal about operator overloading! Thanks for all your work in putting out such a great book!

Summary: Simply the best
Review: Having used C# for over 4 months now, I can tell you that Archer's Inside C# is still *easily* the best book on C# available. Not only is his coverage of delegates and interfaces much more in-depth and understandable, but his .NET coverage (reflection, multi-threading, etc.) is even better than most books on .NET (even though this is a C# book!). Without a doubt, buy this book and keep it on your shelf. It's an invaluable resource.

Summary: Good for intermediate programmers just starting with .NET
Review: Since I have already read a few C# books, the only thing I liked about this book was the multi-threaded programming chapter.

The introduction to Object Oriented programming didn't belong in this book, since most of the rest of the book was aimed at intermediate level developers. Some of the coverage of the C# language also had too much detail for the intermediate level programmer.

For learning about C#, you are better off with "A Programmer's Introduction to C#" by Eric Gunnerson. For learning about .NET you are better off with "Introducing .NET" from Wrox.

Summary: Tom Archer is one of the best!!
Review: If Amazon.com had an MVP award (Most Valuable Purchaser) I'd have it. I spend a lot of time and money purchasing only the best technology books. Now with that said, let me tell you about "Inside C#."

It's, hands down, the best book I've read. Right off the bat Archer explains the fundamentals of OOP, (a chapter all of us should read no matter what kind of OOP geniuses we think we are). He then goes into introducing .NET and never looks back. From C# Class Fundamentals to Writing Code and on to Advanced C#, he keeps you going and motivated to learn. I've gone through the book twice now and have it 'dog eared', marked, scribbled in and flagged.

The author knows his stuff and it shows. Archer is an intelligent well-spoken author that gets the point across no matter what level of experience the reader has. All through the book he explains and re-explains what he's trying to say, (just in case you missed it the first time). Very few authors do this and needless to say it leaves many of us wondering what the heck their point was.

In short, don't get left behind...."GET THE BOOK!!"

Summary: Does one thing, and does it well
Review: This book is the best book yet on C#. It is not meant to be a complete overview of the .NET Framework.

As a C++ programmer I was most interested in how interfaces are described and implemented. The book provides many good examples. The examples are short and trivial, which is a nice way to demonstrate language features without bogging you down in details.

Libraries (such as WinForms) are not documented here. As an experienced developer I am more interested in the language constructs anyway. Library documentation is something that I'm used to studying separately, and, more importantly, it's constantly changing at this early beta stage.

Summary: Finally a book for beta 2 !!!
Review: Obviously the people reviewing this book and giving it low marks because its a beta 1 book aren't really reading the book. I know this because I'm lucky enough to be on the beta program and this book's code won't work with beta1, but DOES WORK WITH BETA TWO! Therefore, I was extremely pleased to find this out since all the other books were written prior to beta 2 and their code examples no longer work. Another reason I like Mr. Archer's book is because it is written in very plain English. Obviously some pretentious, know-it-alls want to run the book down for this, but I personally like the way the book "talks" to me as though the author is having a conversation with me and patiently walking me through the code. Anyway, I'm no expert in book reviews. However, what I can say with certainty is that I've been using C# for over 6 months and this book will help *anyone* getting started with the language.
