Rating: Summary: Not much different than Crystal's own manual Review: I purchased this book as a reference. Fortunately, I had a separate training course for learning the Crystal application. And I now teach the product. It's a good reference. I truly haven't had a question yet regarding basic or advanced procedures in the application that I couldn't find. But I would not recommend it for learning the application. It is dense. I'm also disappointed that it is not very different from the CR 8.0 manual published by Crystal Decisions. The layout and procession of the book are virtually the same! It could have included more tutorials, too. One thing that I would love for any CR reference/manual to include is a list and description of all the formulas in the system. To my knowledge, this does not exist anywhere, even in Crystal's own documentation. PURCHASING RECOMMENDATION If you need a solid reference and didn't purchase manuals with Crystal, this will work. If you need to learn the product, get something else.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Investment Review: The second training class I took was taught by one of the editors of this book, who highly recommended it to me. This book is amazingly helpful and constantly disappears from my desk at work, as it is frequently borrowed by other Crystal users in my office. This truly has proved to be a terrific investment
Rating: Summary: Acuatlidad de Crystal Report 8.5 Review: These is a goob reference, its very complete and cover the .NET orientation.
Rating: Summary: How about the INCOMPLETE Reference Review: This book was a waste of money. It is more of a beginner's guide and tutorial than a reference book. Needs to add a reference section for all of the functions available in the formula editor. Even though the cover claims .NET programming, there were no samples. The CD contains only 24 sample reports (they could of used a floppy instead). If you are new to Crystal Reports go ahead and get this. If you have any experience don't bother.
Rating: Summary: Power Users Paradise Review: This is profound literature. Do not buy this book if you want to "Just Get By" in your report writing. If you need/want that edge on the competition; this is for you.
Rating: Summary: Wish for more developer stuff Review: While a very comprehensive book, getting me through some of the starting developer tools. This book left a little bit to be desired in documenting more on the ASP developing capabilities. Rather just telling you to "check out the sample code" which isn't bad advice (the sample code in Crystal Reports is fairly thorough) but I'd appreciate documentation on every possible Method, Property, etc. on the ASP Development objects in Crystal Reports. In short: any power user will appreciate this book, but developers might be left hanging somewhat.
Rating: Summary: Not bad. Review: You need to usually read several pages of a subject to find the info you're looking for in this book, but at least you don't need to read several chapters. No, it is not a hit list of functions, like one of the O'Reilly books, but it does cover a LOT of stuff useful to, yes, a beginner. I feel I have been able to move from the beginner category to a really advanced level in crystal with the aid of this book, over several months. Like I said, not bad, but you need patience. From reading some of the other reviews on this book, it seems like NOT knowing much about crystal makes this book seem a lot more useful.
