Summary: Great for beginners
Review: It was good but only focuses on DOS.Also the compiler is a pain to install.

Summary: This is a good book if you know nothing.
Review: Until recently my programming experience was limited to the early 80's with Apple Basic (on the II) and Atari Basic (on the 400). I have a good command of logic, but knew nothing of syntax.

I found this book helpful with learning the syntax of C++. It does present ideas VERY slowly, and assumes the reader has a basic understanding of C.

If you have minimal experience with C, and are not looking for an in depth study of C++, this may be the book for you.

If, however, you are looking for good reference for serious programming, you will need to look elsewhere.

Summary: Excellent for migrating from C
Review: Ok, so there isn't much consensus in all these reviews so this book obviously isn't for everyone. But I, for one, loved it. If you don't already know C as I did you might want to look to a different book, but there are lots of people out there wanting to migrate from C to C++ and for these people I highly recommend it. (Why would anyone else buy it? It says "Ideal for C Programmers Migrating to C++" right on the cover, and section 1 is titled "A Review of C"!)

Despite what I've seen in some other reviews I think the material is very logically presented with just the right level of detail and well thought-out examples. Best of all it is an interesting read; this guy is funny. I learned C++ years ago with this book and it still serves as a great reference when I program.

Summary: Falls dangerously short
Review: It's bad enough that the book glosses over many of the important features of C++, giving the "Dummie" the infamous "little bit of knowledge," but C++ for Dummies (Fourth Edition) is poorly edited. Mistakes creep up not only in the text but in the source code of the examples. One would assume that mistakes like this would have been taken care of in the second or even third editions, but nevertheless, carelessness prevails. The scant amount of knowledge into the workings of C++ that the book does provide doesn't arm the reader with the know-how to avoid hours of hair-pulling frustration. Also, the accompaning CD has so many installation problems that the author has several pages on his website devoted to "helping" readers (even this is inadequate for some of the problems I encountered). Rather than use Mr. Davis's quick fix for programming, I suggest one take the time to explore a more indepth (and properly edited) book such as Stephen Prata's C++ Primer Plus.

Summary: This is way worse than C for dummies from Gookin
Review: I can't believe how horrible this book is after reading Gookins C for dummies volume I & II. I think it would be much better that Mr. Gookin had written this book as well. Davies just can't deliver, I don't doubt that he knows his stuff, but some people just can't express their ideas easy and fun enough for other people to learn from them, and Davis is one of them. I won't suggest you to buy this book, you would probably be better off without it, and learn from other books.

Summary: It's no Dan Gookin...
Review: It is OK. I strongly suggest you do C for dummies vol 1 and 2 first. This guy has WAY too many typos in both the source code and the text. He isn't funny and he steals some of Dan Gookins analogies. He knows his stuff, but the guy just can't write. He puts advanced stuff in the code that he dosen't even begin to explain until 40 pages later.

Summary: No C knowledge required...
Review: Ok, i bought some book on Visual C++, but realized i needed to know C++ first. So i bought this book, and wasnt disappointed. The author overall does a very good job of explaining C++. The author even says at the start of the book, previous editions off C++ for Dummies requried knowing C, but this one DOESNT. I dont know what the hell the people who said he states u must know C were on. And he backs those words up... I didnt know a thing about C and was able to understand this book. I dunno how some people who actually knew C said this book [...]...

Summary: An excellent book for beginners...
Review: This book DOES NOT require a knowledge of C or any other programming language. The GNU compiler on the CD is somewhat basic but hey... it's free.

This teaches the very basics of programming from the C++ point of view and is useful for anyone who has never learned a programming language or wants to learn C++.

Summary: Best Book
Review: This book is the best book ever written on C++. It is very clear and concise. This is unlike some of the other books out there e.g the Who's Afraid of series which are written like novels and are very hard to follow. Buy this book if you want to learn C++

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!
Review: This was the best book on C++ that I had ever read. The chapters are clear and concise and manage to balance out the reading with actual code samples. Unlike the Who's Afraid of Series which pretty much reads like a novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn C++.
