Summary: Examples for the EJB and servlet don't work
Review: I tried to run those examples included in this book with the same versions of tomcat and jboss as used by Budi, but i always got some errors; the one that still makes me scratching my ass is the tassie online bookstore, i kept receiving "[Root exception is ava.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.jnp.interfaces.NamingContextFactory]", even with every possible .jar from jboss/client/ is included in the classpath.

Summary: Don't buy this book !!
Review: I was mislead by the positive reviews on this book and bought this book. The author just gives pages and pages worth of code, but does little to explain the concepts. The book has more than 100 pages on Javascript !! I know Javascript is great, but not in a servlet book!!. It easy to lose interest in the author's style of writing. In my honest opinion, there a lot of grammatical errors. The CD is worthless.
Stay away from this book.

Summary: Excellent introductory book
Review: I was so impressed with this book that it prompted me to write my first amazon review.

If you're learning Java, this should be one of the first books you buy. Unfortunately, I wasted some money purchasing lesser-quality books before I found this one.

The author has an obvious command of the topics; they are explained clearly and concisely. The examples are short and to the point, which I always appreciate.

Summary: Guide to passing Web Component Developer Certification Exam
Review: I would say this is the best book on servlets/JSP. Discussions on every topic are in-depth and examples useful. I used this book for preparing my Web Component Developer Certification exam, and I passed. If you are studying for this exam, I really recommend this book.
- Read all the chapters.
- Run the examples.
- Email the author if you run into problems. He does reply.

Summary: Best first book for J2EE
Review: If you are new to EJB's etc. and about to jump cold into the world of Java 2 Enterprise Edition and want a quick start on EJB's, Servlets and JSP, this is your book. You will definitely need a more advanced book on EJB's like 'Enterprise Java Beans' by O'Reilly after reading this book though.
One very cool feature of the book:
The book gives detailed step by step instructions on how to download and set up application servers like Tomcat and JBoss to actually execute the code being presented. And doesn't leave you at the mercy of 'online instructions' from the server vendors.
One warning: the book wastes about a 100 pages on Javascript. I was a little irritated to see JavaScript in a book of this kind. But this is something that I am easily willing to overlook considering the book's other virtues.

Summary: Java`
Review: JAVA FOR THE WEB
With Servlets, JSP and EJB
Budi Kurniawan
PUBLISHER: New Riders
REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: Servlets, JSP and EJB - know what these mean? If not, check out Chapter One for a definition of servlets and JSP and Chapter 28 for EJB's definition. This book is definitely written for a programmer of web sites rather than a WYSIWUG user. It contains lots of already written code and does provide definitions of terms all through the book.

The CD contains some of the files so you can work through what is being discussed. 33 Chapters and 7 appendices give one more material than can be read and understood in one sitting.

If you want to learn more about Java and how to program with it, add this book to your library.

Summary: Learning Web Programming Fast And Easy
Review: Learning WEb programming is very easy with this book because the author explains all the concepts extremely well and examples are plenty and work well. There are more than 300 code listings in the book, providing code for almost anything you need: session management, database accesss from servlets/JSP pages, online e-books, file-upload, file download, beans, EJB, JMS, JavaScript, etc.
This is one of the better books in Java programming and really speeds up the learning process.

Summary: So good, it's now a required textbook...
Review: My J2EE students are enjoying it as well. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Kurniawan.

Summary: "4" for content, "1" for execution
Review: Ouch! If there is a book out there with more typographical errors, i sure haven't seen one. This book averages one error per two pages. I won't blame the author for these errors, as they should have been caught by the editors and proofreaders (SHAMELESS PLUG: New Riders, i'd be happy to proofread any book for you).

As for actual content, WOW! It's one of the top five java books in my library.

If you can tolerate reading a book that has a plethora of typos, this is a book for you. otherwise, maybe wait until the 2nd edition..

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good book but...
Review: The book covers a LOT of topics about Java Web programming (including EJB). I think the level of this book is probably at least mid-level. I would have given it a better rating had all the examples (and code on the CD) worked. Typos and errors. But, nevertheless, still worth the read.
