Rating: Summary: It Communicates Beautifully! Review: Over the last several years I have spent hundreds of dollars on books concerning New Media - some good and some bad. They all had some good points but never really delivered what I was looking for in web development / design. MTIV is everything I've always looked for in one volume. Process, Inspiration and Practice - it's here, and it's bolstered by real world experiences and personal reflections from Hillman Curtis as a creative in the industry. It's easily approachable to the newbie and an affirmation to the experienced. This book is well received; I just cannot well enough express how happy I am to have this book. Kudos to you, Hillman Curtis.
Rating: Summary: Don't Hesitate Review: This book is extremely well written and laid out. I've already shared some of the Process information with others who were having a difficult time with clients. Hillman offers rock solid advice on how to LISTEN and get to the main theme of a project. His process for getting the information he needs and involving the entire team is truly inspirational. I especially liked the tips on how to involve everyone and how to get innovative ideas flowing by asking the correct questions. You will also get a through understanding of what New Media is. Hillman says this book is an homage to the craft, an exploration of ideas and an autobiography of himself as an artist in the 21st Century. There are tons of great photographs but they don't dominate the book. This book is very text heavy and contains an awful lot of very useful information. I think the first section alone is more than worth the price of the book. Well I could go on and on but you really do need to pick this one up and read it yourself.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Review: This book was a very good look into the mind of a new media designer. The creativity ideas in it were very strong. The "process", or the more technical side of it was a very good start to someone who has no background, but very very basic if you have a strong background in any of the disciplines he is trying to teach.
Rating: Summary: A book full of inspiration Review: This book was recommended to me as I first began studying web design. It really inspired me then, and it continues to inspire me everytime I read it. This book is written like a friendly conversation, and you can't help but feel encouraged. Because Mr. Curtis lets you know that someone else has had the same problems and issues that you have, and he shows you how he's worked them out. It isn't so much a "how-to" book as it is a "how-to-be" book. He illustrates how you can be a more effective new media designer in all areas: client relationships, innovation, production. A wonderful book. Buy it today, and you won't be sorry!

Rating: Summary: But the vandals stole the handle Review: This is an astonishing book, and any more said would just be paraphrasing the remarks in the other reviews. Grant me, however, one cheap shot here. I know the hip New York design scene is all over "Disheveled Chic", and though I've seen rougher, more self-conscious photographs of Mr. Curtis, maybe he will want to re-think this cover for the "MTIV, Remix" edition.
Rating: Summary: One of the best Review: This is definitely one of the best design books I have ever read. The approach is honest and thoughtful; a nice change of pace from the usual congratulatory and often pompous style with which a good number of design books seem to be plauged. This book has beauty and substance. In this book, Hillman shares his inspirations, methods, and experience (the title DOES say it all) in a way that seems to not talk at you, but with you. I love the layout, the tone and convention, and the pretty pictures =). No, this is not a how-to book. It will not teach you how to use the basics of Flash, nor will it teach you how to how to create a web page. It is not the place for it. It will however, teach you that even great designers face roadblocks, and how to overcome them. It will open you up to a new perspective on design if you allow it to. I think this book, very successfully, did what it sought of to do. If you don't agree, maybe you should read the title again. Don't buy it if you are looking for procedural how-to's to design. Do buy it if you're into honest approaches concerning design.
Rating: Summary: Required Reading Review: This is required reading for anyone on my design team. The personal successes and failures of Hillman add to the experience of the team, and the references used throughout the book are unavoidably fantastic. In addition, the Usability section is as good as I've found anywhere. Again, it's a must read.
