Summary: Saved Me from Insanity
Review: I am a victim of an online obsessed hacker and as a beginner user of computers I thought I'd lose it. I've never liked computers and used to consider it for geeks. However, since I got numerous viruses and Trojan horse attacks I decided to learn everything about computers to fight this sick individual hacking my system.

This book will disect every SINGLE aspect or at least in my point of view of how to OVERPROTECT your system. From high technical stuff to common words for novice users. It is sure to keep you interested. I have read the ENTIRE book a total of 3 times and I skim it often. This is what you may find useful:

You get to learn how to make changes to the registry for basic stuff like placing a warning message before logging on in a Windows XP Home Edition type software and Professional. You learn how to log on and off in the secure way of pressing keys instead of the welcome screen.

It explains password tips like why you should make them a certain length. It goes over hacker type programs that manage to crack passwords in just minutes, hours or days. It goes over the limit to log on windows for Windows XP Profesional. It would be called the lock-out policy.

Then you have Internet Explorer security topics of how you should configure settings. That is not the best part of the book but I feel I should mention it.

There is tons of stuff about hackers, organizations that get them, and all the do's and don'ts of Internet browsing and more.

The best part I liked is how it recommends using a limited account for everyday use and just logging on to the Administrator account for updates. It goes on to explain how to change an Administrator account to a different name to confuse hackers from going on to your system. It shows how to change a limited account by putting "Administrator" to the name of the account to confuse the hacker.

As you can see I can write endlessly. If you are concerned about SAFETY, SECURITY, and reliability with all your computer needs this is a MUST no question about it. From a total novice to a pro I am really liking computers now!!! Totally cool, fun, and fascinating book to learn and enjoy!!! Pick it up and I promise you won't put it down for a minute. The size won't make you feel discouraged because once you get started reading the first few pages you will be hooked. Highly recommended for sure!!!!!!!

Summary: Microsoft Security - well done.
Review: Microsoft has been changing OSes as often as the phone company changes area codes and with that you need to keep up on the latest developments. One of the biggest problems arising from computers today is security and this book certainly helps me to understand what it takes to lock down 2000 and XP.

Having worked with 2000 for over a year and XP for over 6 months, I am finding new things out everyday. I was pleasantly surprised to see that these authors have gone to great lengths to make the understanding of the security systems in 2000 and XP may not be a complex as they seem.

The book is very well documented, in fact the entire book is in PDF format making it a portable reference. What you'll find in the 800 pages is what to do from securing the internet to restricting access to setting user rights and permissions.

The authors have even gone as far as putting in numerous step by step exercises fro you to work with. Another thing that makes this book standout is the fact that is can be used for both the 70-214 and the Security+ exams.

Finally the section on wireless security is one that I am re-reading, while the concepts are understandable, I have to go over the section to fully understand it. The book also has a cd included and as stated before the e-book is include as well as a number of various add-ins and utilities.

I think the overall value comes from the fact that the book covers a wide range of security related information, 2 operating systems, and 2 versions of the XP operating system and is detailed and well documented.
