Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: There is a lot of C++ texts out there. What sets this one out from the crowd is the excellent line by line analysis of each example so that you know exactly what is going on in each program. You know the critical lines in each program as well, so you can confidently alter parts and learn even more as you go. This text brings not just the technical words of C++, it gives you awareness and understanding of the concepts. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Good...but needed a little help Review: I am currently taking this as a college course. I was understanding everything until I got to the chapter on Object Oriented Programming. This is a difficult concept to put into a program. I needed some help in this area, along with the chapter on Pointers. This book does explain well the concepts that are easy to grasp, but for the more difficult concepts make sure you know somebody who can help out.

Rating: Summary: Great for first timers Review: If you are a beggining programmer like myself then this book would help you greatly like it did myself. There are many examples, source codes, quizzes and real life situations. I am glad that I found this book and there is no better begginning book out there.
Rating: Summary: Long and Complicated Review: I wanted a quick way to get into C++, I brought the wrong book this book is boring with borin examples you will get fed up after a few days if you do manage to stay interested it will take you more like 21 months rather than 21 days. I want my money back :)
Rating: Summary: POS, if u know what that stands for Review: This was, by far, a horible book, i mean, 'i love the cover, it look's cool' but the author,,, he does not persent things in a logical order, therefor its hard. i have had some experience in visual basic and i can tell u this, if i did not know quite a bit about visual basic even chapters 3 and on would be hard. This is not really a good book for begginer, and god forbid you are planning to buy this book and u have programming experience. perhaps all those other C++ programmers say this is a ok book, but hey, they know the stuff. another thing about the aurhor is i feel it could be a lot better written, he also uses complicated words that in my opion < could have been eaiser wrote. i got the book with the free cd pack, and ill tell u, i would rather have bought another book, even though i did finish it all, and took from it a preety good understanding of it. i would have liked to see him use simpiler word choice, have us make 1 program and progress though it, and ide also like that 1 program to relate to the real wourl. a few exercises to teach something would be good, but the author has almost every example a complete program. in conclusion i was like this after finishing the book ~_~ instead of ^_^ sure buy the book, but don't say i did not warn you!
Rating: Summary: Taxonomists with a Sense of Humor Review: Teaching and writing is not easy. Reading is not easy either, frustrating sometimes, unless the author is an engaging type with a sense of humor. Right from Jesse's Acknowledgement last paragraph I begin to like his style of writing. Concepts, Terms are all explained in a concise manner in a plain English. The ambiguity of computers jargons avoided, instead part of the text flow. The book really set your mind to C++ programming. The concept INHERITANCE, is explained with 'What is a dog... Taxonomists divide the world of living things into Kingdom, Phylum...' makes it an interesting and digestible. Oh No! Not the dog, the Book. This is a Book worth reading. (is-a relationship). Looking forward to Teach Yourself C# in 21 Days.
Rating: Summary: Not for begginers! Review: This book starts off simple, then jumps into tough stuff. Jesse Liberty didn't do a good job explaining the point of pointers and references in here, so before you read this book, you should read a book on Object Oriented Design, tht isnt related directly to a certain programming language. Also, you should read Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours first, and after your done with all of those books, you can go into C++ Unleashed. Personaly, I think you can find a better book than this, but I learned from it. The good thing about it is its up to date. You don't need to know C to learn this language.
Rating: Summary: (deep sigh) Disappointed Review: This book is a mental torture. I was affraid that it's me but when I saw the revies here I realised I was not alone. I read sentences, paragraphs and even chapters over and over again thinking that I missed something, when I realised at the end that the author is skipping explanations, you get confused and you realise you need to connect to the Internet to obtain an explanation from some other site. I am lucky to have Mastering Visual C++ by Michael J. Young where you get some 200 hundred pages of the introduction to C++ before moving to MS Visual C++ and MFC. My suggestion is don't bother with this book. You will get to the certain point but that's it, after that you need to get a degree in psychology to understand what this guy is talking about. I am sorry to say, but I will not buy any other book by Jesse Liberty. With all respect Jesse, but this is a time waster. Get those notes, source code and other things cleared and explain in plain English why certain things work the way they do. Have a look at Teach Yourself C in 21 Days to see what a good comprehensive explanation is and what it all means.
Rating: Summary: A waste of time Review: Just as has been said by many other readers, this book skips coherent and understandable explanations of key points that are then expected to be understood later on. C++ is supposed to be a daunting task but not because of poor teaching of the basics which should have as thorough and understandable explanations as possible. The only good thing about this book is its author and newsgroup. He responds to e-mails quickly, and the newsgroups are quite usefull. I think more than the book.
