Summary: Good Overview of Servlets
Review: A great book for getting started with Java servlets. It explains the advantages over CGI, and the oncoming trends with this technology.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Dishonest
Review: A quick scan through the pages will reassure you this book is recent 1999 and it covers the latest version JSDK 2.1. Five minutes after you get back from the bookshop you realise Mr Callaway or the publisher has been something less than honest.

It describes JSDK 2.0 but text has been changed to say 2.1 e.g. references to c:\jsdk2.1\lib\jsdk.jar must have originally been c:\jsdk2.0\lib\jsdk.jar both \lib and jsdk.jar are present in version 2.0 but not 2.1

Summary: This book is for beginners
Review: Based on the title, I thought this book would give good coverage of servlets and some good examples. Instead what I found was shallow material and description of servlet API -- that too specific to version 2.0.

I do not recommend this book to experienced servlet programmers.

Summary: Good introduction to servlet programming
Review: Before this book, I had no idea what a Java servlet is. Well, this book made sure that I understand it fully. The author took time out to make the book user-friendly for people wanting to learn this subject. I also found it tremendously helpful in learning about JSP. This book is a must-have for anyone wanting to excel their knowledge about server-side programming.

Summary: A book for beginners and not for experied java developers.
Review: Do not expect a lot from this book going by the title. It helps a person new to servlets understand what they are.

Summary: Great web intro, and provides enough to write servlets
Review: I am a java programmer who knew the basics of the web but was not an expert by any means. The intro helped explain some web concepts. From Chap 7 on, things get good. The author writes clear and concise explanations. I know java very well, so I am not sure how I'd feel if I had not, but the explaination of servlets was very good. After going through the exercises and using the included software, I am very comfortable writing servlets.

Summary: Started writing servlets right away!
Review: I am certainly not new to programming, but I WAS new to Java servlets. And even though I hadn't written a lick of Java before this book, it was not very hard to follow along. One of the great things about this book is that it's not a monster in size! I got through it in a few days and I'm ready to put my first servlets into production. It covers a lot of topics in just the right detail. I was extremely pleased. I've also e-mailed the author with some questions and he has been amazingly receptive and helpful. Go buy this book! And tell Dustin that Neil sent ya!"

Summary: Good read and a good reference
Review: I found this book to be a very good buy. The first few chapters that go over the basic principals behind the internet and web development were well written and informative. But I can see that a more senior developer will probably already know most of it. I usually have a hard time finding a book that falls in the middle between novice user and hard core expericended developer But with this book, it hits the middle spot perfectly.
I'm currently developing using jsp's and servlets and this book has been a good reference to me as well.

Summary: This is the only book to read on Server Side Programming
Review: I have being in the JAVA business for more than 10 years, and this book is certainly one that can't be missed in my library.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Should be 5-stars
Review: I have some programming experience from college in c and some post-graduation experience as an asp coder at a small startup. I had also done some jsp coding at that startup, but when it came time to go back and make my own jsp pages without an office full of people to answer my questions and provide me with code templates to work inside of, I was lost. This book is a very gentle introduction to servlets and tries very hard to be thorough. Definitely 5 stars for somebody who is new to servlets.
