Summary: A useless book
Review: There is NOT even one example in this book that can run on the computer. So, how can people learn web services by this book? Who is this book for? Is it for experts of web services? Experts do not need to read this book. Is it for people who don't know web services and want to learn? You cannot learn by this book. Is it a good reference book? NO. Therefore, this book is useless. Even the author himself doesn't know who is this book for. He wrote in his book:" It (the book) is more of a reference than a tutorial, but many of the chapters have a tutorial-like style. This book is designed to teach J2EE Web Services and is more than a reference." (page xxxiv of the book). From what the author wrote, we can see that this book is not a tutorial, and is not a good reference book. The author just copy and past some contents from Internet and mix up, that is the book.

Besides, the book repeats same XML document again and again, just wastes paper, and makes the book thick and heavy.

I wish this kind of book would disappear in amazon web site. I wnat to rate this book by 0 star.

Summary: Nothing special - Good intro but very light on examples
Review: This book disappointed me as it failed to meet my expectations. If compare this book to the author's EJB book then you will be disappointed like me as well. This book explained the basics of Web services and its J2EE examples. Although the content and examples are well paced at the end all I found is this book lacks a real world architecture and implementation strategies. Like me, many reviewers told the same as this book does'nt cover much more than the J2EE 1.4 tutorial in aspects of Web services. I felt like I lost my grasp of Java examples at the end as the book did'nt finish how to put all the APIs together.

Summary: No value for the money
Review: This book is not very promising for those want to build a real-world Web services architecture. This book repeats the tutorial of Sun's Java web services. The book completely forgot about how to make all components work together and lack content how to implement Web services from legacy J2EE components, Interoperability with .NET or other Web services solutions etc. I found the first 3 chapters and last 2 chapters does not make sense. Besides, the book is more typical and spends more content like the free Java tutorial download from Sun site. Where is the value ?

Summary: Good introductory book on web services
Review: This book takes the reader from first principles, laying a foundation upon which the implications and potential of Web services can be fully understood. Early chapters introduce and explain Web services basics.

Throughout the book the author maintains a vendor neutral perspective. So if you want to read an introductory text on web-services at leisure, this book is a good choice. Its written in a very comprehensible style and I had no problems understanding the key concepts.

If you are seeking to learn the details of web services beyond introductory concepts then this isn't the book for you.

Summary: A good reference and tech introduction...
Review: This excellent book provides a basic overview of the Java technologies needed to implement a Web Service using the Basic Profile 1.0 as defined by the WS-I. In all cases, the author indicates that his explanations and teachings only cover the most relevant and useful material, an that for complete details, you will need to look elsewhere. That being said, I read this book front to back and this is the first Web Services book that makes sense to me. The technology is complex, but by the time I reached the more complex material, I was ready for it.

My biggest complaint about this book is the author failing to mention that the JAX-RPC compiler is specific to the vendor's implementation, and not part of the J2EE 1.4 distribution as I thought. Bottom line, I can't read this book and write a web service. I have to find an app server that can support web services, such as the Sun ONE app server, and read through their documentation. The book does a great job teaching the technologies though, and is a valuable addition to my reference library.

Summary: This book needs help vvvv badly!!
Review: Wow, where do I start.
I was *extremely* disappointed with this book. I have come to the conclusion that there are two reasons this book sells 1- because there are only 2 or 3 books on the market that cover this subject and 2- a certification(scwsd) forum is Moderated by the author.Much of the book is filled with fluff. No case-study,example(code) is worthless not at all practical!.Of all of the technical books dealing with a variety of subjects over the years, this is the absolute worst - bar none.WASTE of money better read the spec.
