Rating: Summary: Simply put, the best Java book out there. Review: Peter van der Linden writes in an entertaining, clear and easy to read style. This book not only teaches you the basics of Java it will give you some insights into computers, programming and networking. All of this with short entertainments scattered throughout. Buy this book.
Rating: Summary: This text is when you already program and JUST want JAVA Review: Phew! That one line synopsis is a bit too restrictive! What I was trying to say is "The book "Just Java" is for those who already know how to program, and JUST want to learn JAVA. If you enjoy my writing and teaching style be sure to take a look at my book "Expert C Programming" -- again, not for beginners. Pete
Rating: Summary: You must have if you do not have one. Review: The very first thing to highlight is the author's ART OF WRITING. Author used very simple language which increases interest to read more and more. At the same time, to the point and no confusion. It is really amazing book. Great job by author and hope the same "easy to understand complex things" writing style in future books.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: This book is great for people who have had some programming experience. For those of you who have not, I suggest starting with an introductory java book. As for the content, there is a LOT to wade through. The author does a great job of teaching you about the inner workings of Java. Thats exactly what I wanted out of a Java book. His explanations are lucid and his writing style is excellent. If you REALLY want to learn Java, this is your book, just make sure you've done some programming beforehand.VERY good as a second java book, right after a good primer.
Rating: Summary: Just Java 2, 5th Ed Review: This book is not for beginners. The author does not begin talking about any programming until chap4. Furthermore, he keeps trashing Microsoft and other programming languages C, C++ and C#. If you wanna get a quickstart in programming Java, you will have to endure a lot of waiting. Otherwise, I think this book is interesting and comprehensive.

Rating: Summary: Finalist in JavaWOrld's "Java book of the Year" Review: This book is the only "learn Java" book that is a finalist in JavaWorld Magazine's "Book of the Year" Awards. This is for 2002. The awards are given out at JavaOne conference. The fifth edition means that the book has been updated with a lot of improvements based on reader and student suggestions. The book is up-to-date with the current version of Java 2, namely J2SE version 1.4.
Rating: Summary: Not impressed... Review: This book lacks detail. Rather than adequately cover many Java subjects in depth, the reader is referred to JDK documentation for detail (over and over again). I had to purchase some REAL books to learn the language. If one wants a BASIC overview of Java, Sun technologies, IT industry trivia, and computing humor, this is your book. If you are new to Java, seeking to really learn the language, and like material that provides a lot of examples, THIS IS NOT THAT BOOK. About the only thing that I find my copy useful for is collecting dust.
Rating: Summary: Highly recommended Review: This book made learning Java a pleasant and interesting task, not a chore. The concepts flow smoothly, and the examples are great. The writing is interesting - the author obviously knows his stuff, and presents it in a way that makes sense. The CD contains some amazing Java programs, including a couple of utilities that I don't know how I ever managed without! They work on Linux, the Mac and Windows too. Great value, great read.
Rating: Summary: Java - Head First Review: This book makes Learning java fun. After 2 college courses in Java, this book made the little and slightly confusing aspects of Java completely understandable with little effort. I think it would be helpful to have a little programming background first, though. The best Java book on the market for almost anyone attempting to learn the basics of Java. I highly recommend it!
